Show EUREKA LIBRARY ISJEJICATED : Senator Sutherland, Governor Spry and Other Notables Take Part in Ceremony. . i Eureka, Oct. 13 Eureka's new public library was dedicated today with interesting in-teresting ceremonies, two large gatherings gather-ings taking place in connection with the event. The large auditorium Of the reference room of the library was well filled in the afternoon, when the formal dedication exercises were held. Tonight Governor AVilliam Spry and others addressed ad-dressed a large assemblage at a banquet' ban-quet' at Elks' hall. Mayor Andrew L. Mitchell occupied the chair at the dedicatory exercises. After the singing of "America," by a special choir, and the invocation by the Rev. S. Allison, Mayor Mitchell delivered deliv-ered a brief address, in which he complimented com-plimented the building committee and especially James D. Stack, the chairman, chair-man, for the work done. He also paid a high tribute to Andrew Carnegie, chief donor of the library. ' Professor Howard R. Driggs, secretary secre-tary of the State Library association, I delivered a good address, in which he awarded Eureka the palm for leadership leader-ship in the library-gymnasium movement move-ment in the state. The Rev. P. Mannion of St. Patrick's church delivered an address, his theme being the necessary connection between education and industry. Bishop Peter Borup also delivered a short address, which was listened to with much attention, atten-tion, advising those present to push their town and make good men and women wo-men of the boys and girls. Professor Baker, superintendent, of the Eureka schools, made the closing address. A violin solo was given by F. H. Crittenden, Critten-den, accompanied on the organ by Miss ' Mabel Hupfer. : About 200 persons were in attendance at the banquet held at 9 o'clock tonight at the Elks' lodge room, the gathering being the most representative ever held, in Eureka. Addresses were delivered by Governor Spry, Senator George Sutherland, A. C. Nelson, state superintendent of public instruction; Howard R. Driggs, Mayor Mitchell, Professor Baker and Miss An-abel An-abel Mooney of -Eureka. The governor and other speakers congratulated Eureka Eu-reka on being among the first to take advantage of the library-gymnasium law. Music was furnished by the Eureka Glee club. Miss Genevieve Sullivan, Mrs. W. B. Thurmond, AValter Jensen and F. H. Crittenden. |
