Show The Divorce Evil. While the Apostolic Delegate was in Chicago for the consecration of Bishop Dunne, he was asked to give his opinion as to the greatest evil in this, country, and its remedies. He said in part: "I consider the prevalence of divorce the greatest of this country's evils, ana I consider the misuse of wealth by the rich, who promote divorce, and other evils, the greatest menace to the Lnitea States. The misuse of wealth is, perhaps, per-haps, the root of most of the country s social evils, and the unscrupulous methods meth-ods by which great wealth is often obtained ob-tained constitute another great evil. Healthy public opinion, good laws, temperance tem-perance and the practical righteousness inculcated by the moral teachings ot religion are the remedies for divorce, for the misuse of wealth and the other social so-cial and Industrial evils. Of course the greatest of these remedies is religion. His Excellency was inclined to take an optimistic view, however, of all the vital problems confronting the American Ameri-can people. "I believe this wonderful nation will prove capable of solving all its puzzling problems." he said. "Though the divorce court antics of the' rich and the near-rich are demoralizing, it is a grand thing to find so very many rich putting immense sums of their money to philanthropic, charitable, scientific and religious uses. The misuse of great wealth is generally found among the rich young people who have no brains. It must be said, however, that there is some improvements even among the silly rich of the younger generation. This I attribute to the steady growth of religious re-ligious belief and the manifest decline of irreligion." The Pilot. |
