On the 417th anniversary of the day on which he unfurled the flag, of Spain on the shores of a nameless isle, which formed a part of the western hemisphere, and thereby planted the seed of a civilization which flourished as no bloom flourished before, a tribute to the memory of Christopher Columbus Colum-bus was yesterday paid by the people of Montana. In Butte his ever-memorable feat of discovery w-as celebrated with fitting ceremonies, and was given official offi-cial recognition." The observance of Montana's new holiday was under the auspices . of the Knights of Columbus and the Christoforo Colombo society. Special church services, a parade and banquet were features which marked the observance of the day.. Out -of-town members of both organizations organ-izations from Helena, Anaconda, Missoula Mis-soula and Great Falls attended the celebration cel-ebration ceremonies and these included Governor Norris and Bishop Carroll of the Helena diocese. Although business was not suspended, the city and county offices as well as the public and parochial schools were closed for the day. A solemn high mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's church yesterday morning and the members of the Knights of Columbus Co-lumbus and the Christoforo Colombo society attended the service in a- body. Throughout the service was unusually impressive. Within the sanctuary was Bishop John P. Carroll, who occupied his throne on the gospel side of the altar, attended by Rev. Fathers Ryan and Hannan, who acted as deacons of honor. hon-or. Very Rev. Father Day, vicar general gen-eral of the diocese, was celebrant of the mass, and the other officers were: Rev. Father Sullivan of the Sacred Heart church, assistant priest: Rev. Father Leitham of St. Joseph's church, deacon; Rev. Father Thompson of Holy Rosary church, Bozeman, sub-deacon;. Rev. Father Follet, assistant pastor of St. Patrick's church, master of ceremonies. Rev. Father De Siere, pastor of St. Patrick's Pat-rick's church, Rev. Father O'Kennedy, assistant pastor of St. Patrick's church, and Rev. Father Pirnat of the Holy Sa vior church, also occupied seats within the sanctuary. Following the first gospel Bishop Carroll Car-roll preached an eloquent sermon on the life of Christopher Columbus. Butte Miner, Oct. 13. As the sun was breaking over the eastern horizon this morning Miss Mae Lenora Curtis, daughter of General Charles D. Curtis, the pioneer of Helena, Hele-na, and John Francis Cone, United States surveyor general, stole a march on their Helena friends and repaired to the cathedral of Sacred Heart, where, in the presence of the sisters from St. Vincent's academy and the sisters of St. John's hospital, the bridegroom's mother and the bride's father, they were united in the holy bonds of wedlock wed-lock by the Rev. Victor Daly, vicar j general of the diocese of Helena. Thj bride and groom were unattended savt for the presence of General Curtis and Mrs. Cone, who stood at the foot of the altar while the ceremony was being performed. General Curtis gave the bride away. Special nuptial mass was celebrated, and the church for the occasion oc-casion had been beautifully lighted and decorated by the sisters of St. Vincent's Vin-cent's and St. John's, many of whom had known and loved the bride since the days of her childhood. Helena Record, Oct. 8. The many friends of Dan Hanley, a popular young man of this otv nnrf who left here a' year ago for the east, have not yet recovered from their great surprise at the announcement of his marriage, which occurred last July in New York, to Miss Olive Threlkeld, .a beautiful girl of that city. Rev. Father P. J. Gilmartin officiated. They are to visit the city soon, and will be showered with congratulations by sincere sin-cere friends. Assistant City Clerk W. T. McCarthy and his bride have returned from a delightful wedding trip. They visited Seattle. Portland, Snn Francisco and Mr. McCarthy's boyhood home, Vir-giniaCity. Vir-giniaCity.
