Show Extreme Fashions Denounced. J Suffragettes, suffragists and other varieties va-rieties of women aspiring to activity outside the home, were dealth with in terms of withering scorn by Rev. Father Michael of the. Passionist Academic Institute In-stitute of Norwood Park in an address at the Illinois theatre, in Chicago, recently. re-cently. Women were declared to be by nature na-ture absolutely unfitted for the right of suffrage. Women who parade about in large hats, apparently with their souls in the hat feathers, Father Michael classed as worm-eaten leaves of the foliaje of -the social tree. Father Michael's subject was "The Ideal Woman." The address was given under the auspices of the Daughters of Isabella. . "The crowning height of woman's elevation ele-vation can only be attained within her own sphere, and never in that of man," said Father Michael. "Any attempt therefore, on the part of woman to overlap over-lap the boundaries of her . sex and to become mannish is as absurd as an attempt at-tempt by man to become girlish or womanish. wom-anish. "Woman's ability and usefulness does not consist in turning politician nor working for equal suffrage nor seeking office. The logic of these people who are called suffragettes is utterly untenable. unten-able. "Women know nothing of political life and the depths of its intrigues.' Apparently Ap-parently they also know nothing of their own nature and care less about virtue and nobility. "Anyone can readily conceive that woman was never intended by the Divine Di-vine Master to cast herself into the rude turmoil of the political arena. Neither woman's body nor her mind are adapted fo r masculine occupations. Her feet were never made for the march of a soldier or policeman. Her voice, symphonic sym-phonic and melodious, was never meant to pronounce stern sentence. Much less are her mental faculties adapted to administer ad-minister government." Father Michael protested against modern mod-ern styles of the fashion makers. "If dress reform of the present day, which does away with flowing skirts, had its object in becoming mannish, it deserves rebuke," he said. "The good! pure and Christian woman has never found and never will find the flowing skirt an impediment, but rather a thing ' of grace and protection. Tight-fitting male attire also is neither natural, comfortable, com-fortable, healthy nor artistic. "There are some women whose souls are in the feathers of their hats, and, judging from the size of their hats, must be exceedingly large. These women are ' worm-eaten leaves of the foliage of the social tree. "The true, ideal woman must not ape man's nature nor aspire to political preferment, pre-ferment, but must think like a woman, love like a woman, dress like a woman and act like a woman." Father Michael denounced divorce in unqualified terms. |
