In recent years an anti-clerical, anti-t "itrkt ian j cabal has been secretly, working havoc a:-.iaa: the peasantry of France and Spain. The absence of a strong Catholic pre.-s in those countries has aided materially to make this easy. B-sides, we doubt very much the vibrant zeal of Europe in matters of faith. There is apparently an apathetic spirit prevailing pre-vailing as regards religious fervor, not only in France and Spain, but in England and America. Agnosticism, infidelity, atheism and everything that signili-s disbelief in God and. religion wore never so strong as in our present day, and it is universally so. Scoffers and ridicuiers of holy ideals multiply like ilies in hot weather. The dis- soiiMon among Christians, the diversity of doctrines doc-trines and multiplicity of sects greatly promote anti-Christianity. Because of iniquity the charity of multitudes has grown cold. In many hearts it is absolutely dead. To revert to the first part or subject of this article, the secular press that is, a great part of it is a stupendous help to the inauguration inau-guration of these pagan conditions, because anything any-thing that conduces to tear down the foremost, united and powerful religious body of the world the Catholic church demolishes Christianity. Let the Catholic church once disappear ami all other antagonistic bodies of' Christianity would quickly follow. Wherever this has happened in the past, pauperism, degradation, lice itiousness and multiplicity multi-plicity of creeds with all its t rain of anarchy swiftly swift-ly followed. . ' Let, the newspapers. seAqraiid sectarian, follow fol-low the lead of the I-esidjfyt and give the Catholic church, especially in .printing foreign news, a square deal. It will he iU ominous day for business bus-iness stability and evei 1'orj the prosperity of newspapers news-papers when religion if dead in the hearts of men. |
