Show CHURCH THRONGED AT CELEBRATION OF PONTIFICAL MASS Elaborate Ceremony Conducted in St, Mary's Cathedra! by Bishop Scanlan and Assistants, Embellished by a Program of Splendid Music, (F. V. FitzGerald in Salt Lake Herald, Monday, April 12.) The transition from the doleful misereres mise-reres o Passion week to the gladsome laudautes of Eastertide was particularly particular-ly marked in the Easter services at the Catholic cathedral of St. Mary Magde-lene Magde-lene yesterday. For the last two days the cathedral has been In the deepest mourning in reverence for the anniversary anniver-sary of the passion and death of the Savior. Yesterday all evidences of mourning were removed and the members mem-bers of the Catholic faith commemorated commemo-rated with impressive ceremony the glory of the resurrection. The principal service yesterday at the cathedral was at 11 o'clock, when solemn sol-emn pontifical high mass was celebrated cele-brated with all of the grandeur that is an accompaniment to the Catholic celebration cel-ebration of the feast days of that church. It was the more impressive because of the contrast it furnished to the dirge of the requiems of Good Friday. Fri-day. The music formed a large part of the impressive ceremony. St. Mary's choir sang Pacini's Grand Italian mass, composed com-posed especially for Catholic Easter services. The Easter spirit of happiness was denoted by the composer's art. and at the same time the solemnity and the glory of the mystery of the resurrection resurrec-tion was not lacking. The solo parts were artistically and sympathetically terpreted by the vocalists in the choir. The choir was under the direction of Miss Nora Gleason, the cathedral organist. or-ganist. The Right Rev. Laurence Scanlan, bishop of Salt Lake, was the celebrant of the mass. Very Rev. Denis Kiely, vicar general of the diocese of Salt Lake, was the master of ceremonies. Bishop Scanlan was assisted by Rev. Fathers DuClos and Vinucent, both of All Hallows college, as deacon and sub- deacon. In the Catholic mass the celebration typifies the Last Supper, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Christ. For that reason the Easter service contains much more ceremony than most of the other masses of the year. The principal princi-pal services yesterday attracted hundreds hun-dreds of people of every creed in addition addi-tion to the Catholic congregations of Salt Lake. Following the mass, Bishop Scanlan gave to the people the papal benediction, benedic-tion, acting under authority of an official offi-cial communication from the Vatican. This papal benediction Is administered by bishops but four times a year, on Holy Thursday, Easter Sunday, Trinity Trin-ity Sunday and Shristmas. In addition to the singing of the Easter East-er mass the ehfrtr sang the offertory, "Regina Coeli," by Werner, and George Soffe sang a beautiful bass solo. "Veni Creator," by La Hache. The "Gloria in Excelsis Deo" was sung by the choir for the first time since the commencement commence-ment of Lent. Miss Mae O'Neill sang beautifully the soprano solo. "Pleni Sunt Coeli," and Miss Florence O'Neill, assisted by Miss Emily Kuntz, Norman Vote and Thomas Monahan, made the singing of the "Et Incarnatus Est" of the "Credo" most impressive. Miss Alice Farrell and Miss May O'Neil sang duets in portions of the mass. The sermon was preached by Rev. Father Timothy Brennan. Father Brennan's sermon was a pretty expression expres-sion of the lesson of Easter. He said that the glorious resurrection of the Savior Sa-vior was a resurrection that might be shared by all, but that there was but one path to that resurrection the way of the cross. Christ attained this resurrection res-urrection only after the most terrible agony and suffering. These were hardships hard-ships that must be shared in by those who. wished to share in the glory of resurrection. Earthly glories, he said, were attained only through devotion to principle, self-sacrifice and hardship. Spiritual glory, he wished to show was attained in the same manner, but at a sacrifice in a measure commensurate with the final reward. The Easter services began yesterday at the cathedral with a mass at 8 o'clock by Rev. Father Mannion of Eureka, Nev. At 9 o'clock Father Kiely celebrated cele-brated mass and preached a short sermon. ser-mon. Rev. Father James Collins celebrated cele-brated mass at St. Patrick's church. At this mass there was pretty Easter music mu-sic by St. Patrick's choir. The children's chil-dren's St. Cecilia chorus, accompanied by a children's orchestra, sang the hymns at the 9 o'clock mass at the cathedral. Vespers at the cathedral last evening were a pretty portion of the day's Easter East-er services. Rev. Father John A. Ryan of Pittsburg preached the sermon at vespers. His sermon was short, but contained many beautiful Easter thoughts. At the vesper services music was furnished fur-nished by the children's orchestra, with singing by the combined cathedral choirs. Miss Mildred Cuddy was the ! soloist. The decorations of the altars were among the beautiful features of the day's services at St. Mary's cathedral. The floAvers were furnished and the altars al-tars decorated by the Altar society, under the direction of Mrs. McGanney, president of the society. |
