Show HEALTH AND THE THAW. V The February thaw is on. The balmy chinook arrived Tuesday and brought with it ti.it decep- ; th'e Avarmth of the springtime, the mud and slush. and displayed on our streets the accumulated filtli of the winter. It is virtually impossible for the street cleaning department in any toArn to cope Avith the winter, but the people may do much to add to their comfort and health by observing a few precautions at such times. Colds, the grip, pneumonia and rheumatic twinges 1'oIIoav in the Avake of mid-winter thaAA-. all because of carelessness and negligence on the part of the people: Don't put off winter clothing. Stay by the overcoat and heavy Avraps. The genial warmth of the sun at noon-day is deceptive, and the air is colder than it feels. The streets are dirty. Everybody knows that. It is a condition inevitably associated with January Jan-uary thaws. But it is not necessary or desirable that the disease germs lurking in this filth should be carried into homes, offices or street cars. A little lit-tle care on each one's part will do much to make life more comfortable, not only for himself but for others, and the remarkable health of the city dur- j ing the winter may be continued unhindered if each citizen endeaA'ors to protect himself and his fellows by using a little common sonse. The street car company should be aided by ev- I : ery passenger in keeping the floors dry. Shake off Jj the slush before entering the car. The cars will ! f more comfortable and healthier. Sidewalks ough' i all be dry, but many are covered Avith several inches of slush. As one of the first rules of health is to keep the feet dry. property oAvners should giv pedestrians clean sidewalks. eAen if they have no respect for th law rquiring the removal of the snow. The street cleaning department will get the paved streets in good condition soon, but in the meantime let us give each other a square deal. Keep dry, warmly clad, the lungs protected from contamination, contam-ination, and don't sit in a draft. 'Health' will result and health is a mighty blessing Avhich is never so appreciated as when it has departed. |
