Show HOOTED FROM THE STAGE Remarkable Scene at Victoria Theatre, New York United Irish Federation of America Through With the Odious "Stage Irishman." (From the Xew York Times.) The Victoria Theatre was the scene of a remarkable remark-able demonstration recently, in which nearly 300 persons in the audience joined. Hardly had tho curtain gone up on the sketch of the Russell Brothers, Broth-ers, who portray Irish servant girls, when screams and catcalls arose from ;the orchestra and galleries. In all parts of the : house men arose, shouting, "Take 'em off," "Away with 'em." Others contented content-ed themselves with whistling and hooting. s The Russells. on the stage, struggled to make themselves heard and the uproar became louder. The orchestra and the sound of the actors' voices were drowned.' Finally the curtain was rung down. Then almost instantly the house became quiet. There was not. a shout nor a whistle as the audience audi-ence slowly settled back in their seats. William Hammerstein, son of Oscar and manager of the Victoria, had given the order to ring down the curtain. cur-tain. K 'j Mr. llammerstein had remembered that, a committee com-mittee from the United Irish Federation had visited visit-ed him about ten days ago and informed him that any further attempt by a theatrical manager in Xew York City to introduce a character or an act ridiculing the Irish, or in any way calling attention to the pronounced characteristics of the race, would' be met by stem objection. Mr. Hammerstein had agreed with the committee that if any act in which the Irish were portrayed proved objectionable it should not be presented. This seemed satisfactory to the committee and they agreed to report it to the next meeting of their prgauization. The demonstration, however, offered convincing proof .toJklr,. Ilare'Tvsteii' that it .JrcL not pijov& satisfactory. Reports W'yX ""the box office showed that many blocks of eight and ten seats were being purchased, but although this is unusual, Mr. Hammerstein Ham-merstein did not connect it with the threats of the federation. |
