Show (CATHOLIC INDIAN SCHOOLS. Five years ago the Congress of the United States declared it to be a policy of the Government that after a period of Jive years, appropriations for 'contract 'con-tract Indian schools should cease Be ginning in 1S95, these appropriation- I were to be reduced at the rate of 20 per rent annually. In consequence of this declared policy. Catholic Indian Schools last year received but 20 per cent of the sum appropriated prior to the declaration of the new gON e-rnincnt-al policy regarding those schools Hence, next year there will be n'y ap propriation made by the government for the support of the Catholic Indian Schools. These schools are upwards of thirty ln number and have in attendance attend-ance an average of two thousand children, chil-dren, it is obvious that the cost of maintaining-these schools is large and now that Government support has been eutacly withdrawn, the burden of sup- : porting these schools will devolve upoi the faithful. The Commission of Archbishops hav i ing charge of the "Indian Schools," v. composed of the Cardinal Archbishof of Baltimore, the Archbishop of Philadelphia Phila-delphia and the Archbishop of St. j Louis. These Prelates have issued an I appeal for aid in support of the In-ciian In-ciian Schools. We have no doubt that this appeal will meet with generous and ready response re-sponse from the faithful in every diocese dio-cese of the country. Each Bishop will appoint a day on which a collection w ill be taken up. In view of the added burden from this time forth, a generous gener-ous awl hvarty response to this appeal will no doubt be forthcoming. |
