' i D'Vtor Intermountain Catholic: Sir In reply to a letter in your late is-sue about the status of Catholics in the Transvaal, will you kindly allow me to make the following remarks? 1. It is against the law of the South Afrioan Republic for any Catholic to i h .ld office of any kind in the State, or I " to vote for the raad or the president, ! no matter how long he may have been 1 in the country. Catholics and Jews are ranked with colored people and "ille-i "ille-i inmates" in these disabilities, i -2. President Kruger, to gain their fa- v,-r, quite recently proposed to remove Jews; and Catholics from such a d?-: d?-: grading category, but whether he was Hinct-re or not. the raad rejected his j imposition. C.v.-4viiuer.tly if the rather wild assertions of your correspondent "that they do hold some few position's" be true, this would simply mean dert-nner dert-nner of the law. and an enemy would ni.relv have to draw the attention of the government to the fact in order to oust such Catholics from their oflices. ". The onlv people who employ Catholics Cath-olics at all in the Traysvaal, aye. and ' libr-allv support Catholic institution?, are the much decried capitalists, vho employ 100.000 people, irrespective of creed or nationality, and pay $20,-j $20,-j (miO.ooO annually in taxes to the guern- ment. ' 4. As to Lcyds, he must have con cealed his Catholicity very sueeesaful-lv. sueeesaful-lv. 1 for one should not be more astonished aston-ished if I heard that Satan himself were a Catholic. .". As to the Pretoria nuns holding property, the gift, if any. was from the British government, which, in 1S81, stipulated for the non-disturbance of 1 xisiintr insci tut ions when handing over j., wsesMion to the Transvaal executive. My own oonviotion is, however, that i there was no gift at aii, but simply compensation for destruction of proper! prop-er! v during the siege, the British garrison gar-rison having occupied the convent as j thp best strategic position for the de- fense of the town. 1 am. etc..
