Show Hearty Breakfast l or Child Health "No school child should start his day without a substantial breakfast," says Elna Miller, extension nutritionist nutrition-ist of the Utah State Agricultural college extension service. "This breakfast should begin with fruit and should include a cooked cereal, toast or day-old bread made from whole wheat, one glass of hot milk, cocoa or some other hot drink made with milk, and one egg," recommends re-commends Miss Miller. "Such a breakfast will supply the pupil with enough energy to carry him through his morning activities." Miss Miller says that frequently teachers report to her that unbreak-fasted unbreak-fasted students are so hungry when they arrive at the school building via a bus that they eat their cold lunch before school begins and have nothing left to eat at noon. "An adequate lunch is just as important im-portant as is the substantial breakfast," break-fast," continues Miss Miller. "If the lunch contains something hot the pupil pu-pil has a much better chance of being physically fit and mentally alert." One community recently reported to Miss Miller that the problem of the hot school lunch had been solved by them. This is how: Each mother is responsible for preparing at home and serving at the school, the hot dish for one day to the entire group. After each mother hast had her turn once she prepares the dish one additional addi-tional day for each child she has in school. In that way the mother who has only one child in school does not feel that she does more than her share of work. |
