Nephi at Gunnison. Richfield at Elsinore. Staging a final play in the 9th inning in-ning at Elsinore last Sunday, which took the Elsinore players off their feet, the Gunners duplicated their feat as of their opening game in the first half, and carried off honors from the Elsinore bunch. Up to the 7th inning in-ning Elsinore led by two points. Both sides failed to score in the 8th and in the 9th the Gunners staged a comeback come-back and sent three runs over home plate and won a close victory by a score of 9 to 8. The game was exceedingly exceed-ingly close from start to finish, and each squad was out to win the first game of the second half. Wilf Bauer, chucker for the Gunners, Gun-ners, was in his usual true form and not only had his adversaries in tight places at all times, but he struck out 14 of the Elsinore boys in addition to hitting three outi of five times at bat, two of which were three-baggers. Bauer's support was good and his associate as-sociate players were showing in good form. Hugh Halverson, in a Gunner suit, and playing short stop, was in his old form of hitting, getting .500. One of the smashes was for a clear circuit. LeGrande Johnson was in the box for Elsinore and he carried on a steady pitching feat until he entered the ninth inning. At this period the score was 6 to 8, with Elsinore leading, lead-ing, but a "blow-up" allowed the Gunners Gun-ners to mark three more runs, carrying carry-ing off a victory by a single score. Johnson struck out 12 men and allowed allow-ed 10 hits. Some discord was evident during the game, brought about by charges of unfair umpiring, and a threat has been made that Elsinore will protest the game. It is believed, however, that the matter will be adjusted without taking the matter before the board of control. GUNNISON. B. H. O. A. Stubbs, 2b 4 0 3 1 A. This ruling was a part of the orders resulting from a meeting of the several umpires held at Salina Sunday evening. Gunnison, Salina, Ne-phi, Ne-phi, Richfield and Scipio were repre-j sented at the meeting. The umpires also voted that a best method for satisfactory results, both to the fans and players, would be to put the umpires um-pires on a salary, which would be nominal. Another ruling was that each team supply the necessary paraphernalia parapher-nalia for the umpires chest protector, pro-tector, mask, indicator and a rule book. It was brought out that only two clubs in the league furnish rule books. Without the books, containing the regulation rules, fair and square decisions de-cisions cannot be made. |
