Show New Records Made At Big Sugar Mill Operations at the Gunnison Sugar mill, started last Friday morning at 7 o'clock a. m., are continuing unabated un-abated and a new record run is being be-ing established. As a result of the first two-day run, 2100 bags of sugar su-gar were processed through the mill. On the first day 1001 tons of beets-; beets-; were sent through the slicer, setting' a new record for the plant. Sunday j night a new high record was set when 1061 tons were sliced and sent through the various departments to I complete the finished product. With , the present records established, it is I planned to keep the average at about i 1000 tons1 or more daily, according to Hart J. Sanders, factory superintendent. superinten-dent. "Additions and extensive improve-, improve-, ments in the mill," Superintendent j Sanders stated, "will enable the fac- tory to handle at least 150 tons 'more -daily than in 1932. Thus far, every part of the machinery is working in tip-top order, and we hope to keep it going continuously, unless some-" hing unforseen happens." With harvesting started in North ; Sanpete and sections of Sevier coun- ty, the mill is well supplied at all ' times. When the peak of beet harvest- ing arrives, which will be about the middle of thig month, the factory and the beet fields will be real scenes of activities. While the beets are largo, the sugar content is somewhat lower at this time than it was at a corresponding corres-ponding period in 1932. This is ac- . counted for by the fact that the beets are still growing in many parts of the district and each day are adding sugar. The later harvested beets' are expected to boost the sugar content very materially. A working organization at the fac-f fac-f ory has been about completed, with three shifts working at the factory proper. With the 8-hour plan for the workers, the wages paid are equal to those of 1929. All indications point J o continuous operation of the mill well into January, 1934. This will be. another an-other record for the factory, and will be due to the fact that growers are 'earning, year, by year that beet growing grow-ing is one of the best ven'ures, .as I there will be no hold-over from one I year to another and that the grower will get his cash payment with the delivery of his beets. |
