Show UTAH STATE FAIR. Among the firmly established institutions in-stitutions of this state of which it.s citizens should be proud and to which their unselfish support is due is the Utah State Fair. Few Utah people, perhaps, realiz'j that the Utah State Fair is one of the oldest expositions in the western United States. It was founded in 185G, only nine years after the pioneers pio-neers entered Salt Lake valley. Only one other state claims a longer state fair record than Utah California in which state, it is said, the fairs have been held since 1852. It was the old Deseret Agricultural & Manufacturing Society that founded found-ed Utah's fair. The society, in turn, was founded by territorial legislative act the preceding winter. This venerable vener-able organization continued in existence exis-tence until 1907, when the present Utah State Fair association was created. cre-ated. Not only, did the Deseret Agricultural Agricul-tural & Manufacturing society promote pro-mote state fairs, but continued a year 'round activity in behalf of agriculture, ag-riculture, horticulture and stockrais-ing stockrais-ing in this new country. It established, establish-ed, among other things, the first agricultural ag-ricultural experiment farm west of the Mississippi. The location was that recently chosen for the new Salt Lake zoo, at the entrance of Emigration Emigra-tion canyon. It was called "Deseret Gardens," and many present staple crops of Utah can trace their local ancestry back to the seed plots in this small area. From a single room filled with the meager products of pioneer farms and homes, with prize livestock tethered teth-ered to hitching posts, the Utah State Fair has grown to be one of the outstanding out-standing state expositions in America. Amer-ica. Its livestock exhibits, in particular, particu-lar, feature entries from far and wide, for the Utah awards are eagerly eager-ly sought by stock breeders and fanciers the country over. The Utah StatE Fair continues to progress. It is distinctly a state show, as opposed to a metropolitan attraction to which people of rural districts are invited. It is largely to the people of the state outside of Salt Lake City that the fair association associa-tion looks for the support that assures as-sures continued success. On behalf of this venerable and worthy state enterprise, this newspaper news-paper bespeaks the support of its readers. |
