'T went direct to Cape Town and had headquarters at differ- ent times at Port Elizabeth, East London and Durbon, but failed to get very far into the interior and into the wilds of Africa. However, I made trips along the coast and saw many interesting people and what would curiosities to the American people. Yes, there are many Americans, Dutch, German and English at th.1 various towns and in many ways -they arc modern. On, the other hand, you find the natives somewhat backward back-ward in advancing toward civilization. civiliza-tion. Deep in the interior, though, the native Africans are as pictured and arc in the savage stage. Guides, however, how-ever, known and familiar to the wild races, frequently pilot travelers to points where the natives hold religious reli-gious dances." Byron reports he had a successful, as well as educational, trip and it will long be impressed in his thoughts. |
