Show Guards jil Sugar Company iviaKGs uas h Awards In Beet Growing Contest Announcement of the awards of the cash prizes offered by the Gunnison Sugar company, for acreage, tons produced per acre and the cash net return, reveals some interesting figures and unqualifidely demonstrates that suar beet growing in the district is the one profitable, cash crop. Tire tonnage of sugar beets sliced and made into sugar for the season of 1929, was the largest, excepting 1925, since operations were started ten years ago by" the Gunnison Sugar company. The sugar content, during the season just closing, was slightly below normal, but the tonnage per acre was very heavy, and the farmers who took advantage of the excellent sea.-son sea.-son and planted large acreages of beets this year, made a decided success of their farming operations. The following is the result of a tonnage contest made possible through the cooperation of the Gunnison Sugar company and the Agricultural department depart-ment of the Utah Agricultural college. The various classes of competition were divided according to acreages and all fields were carefully measured ..nder the direction of S. R. These fields were carefully thinned, well cultivated end kept free from weeds during the entire growing season. It is true that the average tonnages ton-nages per E-cre for the entire valley can be materially increased through these methods. The cash return per acre from other crops grown in our valley are not at all comparable and this offers mere proof that the acrco;;-" cf sugar beet should be very much incre?.sed in all parts of the district for the New Year 1930. This procedure will help put all farms on a paying pay-ing brsis ar.d increase the cash return from all lines of business very sub- stantially. |
