Wilford Bauer, shortstop for the Gunnison ball team, was simply on that's all in the opening game )f the Southern Utah Baseball leagu", when Gunnison met defeat at the hands of Elsinore, by a score of 3 ' to 2. Hugh Halverson, teammate of Bauer, was also a factor in the play that brought the two scores to Gunnison. Gun-nison. Halverson clouted out a homer, while Bauer hit a homer, a three-bagger, three-bagger, and rounded out with a 2-base 2-base hit. Only for the huge school building setting before the batters at the bottom of the diamond at Elsinore, Elsin-ore, Bauer would' have claimed three home runs. As it was, he headed the hitting- crowd by batting .750. Elmer Staples, generally speaking, had the Gunnison boys at his mercy during his pitching. He held the locals down to 8 hits during the nine innings, in-nings, and retired ten of the Gunnison Gunni-son men. Due to lack of practice the Gunnison forces were unable to locate Staples' fast ball. Vern Erickson, Gunnison's favored pitcher, again proved his ability as a master from the pitcher's box. Erickson Erick-son took measurements of the Elsinore Elsin-ore lads and struck out 15 of the men, and while at bat got two safe hils. His performance at the opening game was unusual and before the season advances ad-vances much he will be back in the "old-time" form.
