Show A Boy and His Herd Plunged Into In-to Bear Hiver. in: is kescii; d-the mm drokx A Lad Drives His Cattle on the Ice to Drink It Gives Way and Thirteen Head Are Lost. Last week an exciting scene was enacted on tin treacherous banks of Bear River, not far from the romantic gorge, and above the great canal dam. A youvg man drove a herd of cattle down to the river to drink. Thick ice protruded pro-truded from the hank to a considerable con-siderable distance into the sullen stream. The thirsty cattle, close pushed by the boy, walked cautiously cau-tiously out onto the ice. Their combined weight pro ml too much for the brittle shell. Suddenly there was a loud crack, instantly followed by a tremendous splash. The boy and his entire- herd were precipitated head-long into the dee), odd water. For a few moments mo-ments there was an awful sc rambling ramb-ling for life. Thirteen of the brutes were drowned outright. Fortunately for the lad, friends came to his rescue. A rope was thrown to him and he was drawn safely to the shore. |
