Show Harvesting of Beets Starts October 21st Notwithstanding the fact that weather wea-ther conditions have not been as favorable as was desired for ripening ripen-ing of sugar beets, dates were set for harvesting by L. J. Arnold, agriculturist agri-culturist for the Gunnison Sugar company, Wednesday. Mr. Arnold announced an-nounced that the harvest in the Gunnison Gun-nison valley and the Sevier districts would be started Monday, October 21st. Ordinarily, the harvesting of beets starts earlier, but this year the time has been set for a later date. The continued warm weather, Mr. Arnold said, has resulted in keeping the beets in a fine growing condition, and all patches show a slowness in ripening. However, with the continued contin-ued growth, it will prove beneficial to the growers to withhold harvesting, harvest-ing, as the tonnage will be materially increased and the sugar . content greater. While there has been a shortage of water for late irrigation, the beet crop throughout the district covered by the Gunnison Sugar company is in a splendid condition, and indications indica-tions are that the harvest will be at least normal, or slightly above. The absence of pests has been noticeable and generally, through the growing season, timely rains have proven a big benefit. With the coming of the harvest and the starting of the big million dollar plant, many of the idle will find employment during the cam- . paign. |
