Show Funds Inadequate For Road Work The county commissioners, last ; Wednesday, announced that an appropriation ap-propriation of $2,000 had been allotted allot-ted to the state highway between Centerfield and Axtcll for emergency emergen-cy repairs. The commissioners, it is stated by members of. the committee, commit-tee, faithfully promised $3,000 at the meeting held at Manti on Tuesday of last week, and why the $1,000 was sliced from the appropriation ia yet to be learned. The matter was taken up at a special meeting of the road committee from this valley after af-ter the information had been conveyed convey-ed of the "cut" and a resolution was passed to the effect that the amount would be accepted. There is a provision, provi-sion, however, and that is to the effect ef-fect that the extra $1,000 will be requisitioned re-quisitioned in the event that the $2,-000 $2,-000 proves inadequate. " In the face of allotting this valley $2,000, which expert road men declare, de-clare, is entirely inadequate, Mt. Pleasant got $3,000 and the promise of a rock crusher.' The aggregated cost of the latter is conservatively placed at $4,000 by the "time it is d -livered. There is not a taxpayer the southern part of the county opposing op-posing the large appropriation for the north end that ' part of the county, no doubt, is just as badly in need of road repair work as th south part, but why there.should be the pronounced discrimination, no one yet has been able to determine.' To avail themselves' of the opportunity oppor-tunity of using the $2,000 on the 50-50 basis, preliminary work is being be-ing arranged to start work on shal-ing shal-ing and graveling the state highway which had been proving a. disgrace to the valley, the county and state during the past winter months. Loading Load-ing pits are being erected and a program pro-gram is being mapped out for the farmers who are to lend aid in doing do-ing the work. It is ' proposed to hurry the work along as rapidly as possible and if the blustery weather continues, thus preventing the farmers farm-ers from getting into the fields for" spring work, a considerable amount of the work can be done before the first of April. Another important matter taken up by the committtee was the appointment appoint-ment of a committee to confer with the state road commission relative to having the $35,000 bond money allotted al-lotted to the Gunnison Valley for concrete paving. The committee, consisting of Mayor J. W. Jones, E. L. Swalberg and W.- H. Cribble of this city, O. L. Malmgren of Center-field Center-field and J. M. Knighton for Axtell, is now at Salt Lake and a meeting with the committee and members of the state road commission will be held either today or tomorrow. It Is proposed to insist that the state highway through this . part of the county be given attention and it will be urged that the "-road building campaign be started just . as soon es practical. At a meeting of , the state road commission and the county commissioners com-missioners held at Salt Lake last month plans were made to have Gunnison Gun-nison put on the two or three year project. This will bejspposed by the committee and every endeavor will be made to have the work start early next spring. In the meantime, however, how-ever, work will bo urged so that the farmers and beet growers will be able to get their products to the sugar factory next fall. |
