Show THE TOBACCO LAW After an expenditure of thousands of dollars during the last two sessions of the Utah State legislature, a new tobacco and cigaret law has been written on the statute books. If the law is wholesome and can be enforced then it is up to the citizens to get squarely back of it and support it. Time will tell and during the next two years the acid test will be given. From an analysis of the measure just pawed and enacted the protection offered the minor is not sufficiently suffi-ciently strong and the youngster who is determined to use the weed will likely find some "loophole" by sending his money to tobacco houses outside of the state. And, too, the heavy tax that is to be assessed the dealers in cigarets, is excessive and its constitutionality may be attacked. Admitting that it is entirely wrong to encourage boys or girls in using tobacco, it is doubtful if the use of tobacco can be restricted by state laws. Attempts to legislate people into morality has always al-ways been a failure. It has been tried for decades and has always proven a failure. Education and home training has proven more effective and if this is carried out "freak" laws and waste of money will be overcome. |
