Show Danger of Floods Less This Year "Unless something unusual happens hap-pens there need be no fear of heavy j floods in the Sevier valley as was I experienced last spring, and ordinarily ordin-arily the Sevier river should be normal." Thus spoke Brice McBride, j water commissioner for the Sevier I river, prior to his departure for his I home at Salt Lake last Saturday, j Mr. McBride spent several days here J taking water measurements of the river at the government measuring j station just west of town, j "The water measurement at this I time shows 560 second feet passing j the Wcstview bridge where the gov-j gov-j ernment guage is located," continued Mr. McBride. "This is unusually high for this time of the year but it cannot can-not be taken as an indication of high waters during tho spring thaws. With the additional storage capacity at the Piute Reservoir dam south of Marysvale and with the canals and other resources fortified against breaking, it is believed that the situation sit-uation is far better than that of last season. The fact that the-snows in the mountains are well packed, wall add another protection. With the light, fluffy snow of last season the sun worked fast and not alone did the snows melt rapidly at the foot hills but far up in the mountains it did its work and the floods came in torrents. The snows, accor-ding to statistics, are heavier this year, but conditions are much better owing to the packed condition." Mr. McBride stated that the waters in the U-B dam were being kept at the 76 foot measurement. This has been the practice for the past two months and the inflow is allowed to waste to help in case of emergencies. |
