Show ! Fate of American Indian, Now Slowly Disappearing l There is, in the fate of the Indian, i ' much to awaken our sympathy, and i much to disturb the sobriety of our judgment ; much which may be urged to excuse their own atrocities; much , in their characters which betrays us into an involuntary admiration. What can be more melancholy than their history? his-tory? By a law of their nature, they i seem destined to a slow, but sure ex-' ex-' Unction. Everywhere, at the approach of the white man, they fade away. We : j hear the rustling of their footsteps, . like that of the withered leaves of '' j autumn, and they are gone forever. Joseph Story. |
