Show An Untutored Nevadan. Last week we called attention to the growing splendor and wealth of Nevada, and mentioned incidentally that Nevada was a suburb of Salt Lake. The Reno (New) Gazette takes oxcep- - tions to this last and thinks we are wrong, dead ' K wrong, when we speak of "Nevada as a suburb of ijjBjf Salt Lake or any other place under the blue can- . opy," and continues in this strain: 'jv Nevada is no place's suburb. Nevada stands : jKt unabashed and unashamed upon its own feet. Ne- 'B vada is today the state where opportunity looms ' H-, larger than in any other place under the singing . nHf stars. Nevada asks odds from no one, although ' H the hand which grants large largess and unstint- ''-H ing favor is always open here. !H Shame on you. ifK California claims Nevada as tributary terri- 'IHI tory. Salt Lake says Nevada is a suburb. ; Jtigm, And from the glittering sands of the Armagosa ' IIBfe to the far frontier where we stand face to face -B with the long wastes of Oregon, the state rocks -')8H with laughter. -HIk We will accept you as our guests, gentlemen, 'IHi and we will welcome you as permanent residents. iiHS But you can not inveigle us with your Ruefs nor -B with your Mormon-Gentile wars. We refuse to be "MS "tributaried" or "suburbed." ' ; Bmb Nevada is today the greatest mining state in jffg' the Union, bar none. The production of Nevada ' ' EPK within the next few yeais will stagger the coun- fl try, and by the time the least of our bonanza IHb camps begin to face bedrock tho long reaches .H where once was gray desert will be green fields, ilMMP and the smoke from a thousand homes will bid welcome to those who would make a suburb or a ;B tributary of us. Uro Nevada's big heart never fails. We listen to a thousand sneers and pass on and to tho best that '3wp is given us to do. We abate not tho warmth of . mb our greeting, and the man who would smite us ' W?& we take around the corner and it is our money . . fe: that goes on the mahonany. We listen to drivel- 1 ing talk about state division and rotten boroughs, ; BP and we fail not to pour forth the stream of gold '4, mm that stays the force of panics. mm All this we do, and blithely. But you can't make a suburb of us, nor can Villi you count us in as tributary. Right here, under 'Iflii the bluest sky In all tho world, where the stars are sown thicker at night and where the wind 53 whispers tales of splendid glory yet to be, we -fmii stand, unashamed, asking no favors, save the fa- 'Id vor of being allowed to play the game right. tlflffi? The foregoing grieves us much. |
