Show A Parallel Case. Things happen every day that are reminders of the past. Years ago a horse-thief was tried and convicted before Judge Rising of the Storey District, Dis-trict, Nevada. When the prisoner stood up for sentence the judge asked him If he could give any reason why sentence should not he pronounced pro-nounced upon him. He answered: "No, but with your honor's permission I would like to make a few remarks." The judge, leaning back in his chair, said: "Go on." The prisoner then said: "I want to thank your honor for the way you have conducted con-ducted my trial. Nothing could have been fairer. I want to thank the prosecuting attorney. I do not think he has used any more severity toward me than the case justified. I want to thank the jury. Under the circumstances I do not think they could have brought In any different verdict from what they did. "I want to thank the sheriff and his deputies for the uniform kindness they have bestowed upon me since my arrest. I want to thank my attorney. I think he has done the very best he could, but your honor, make the sentence as light as you can finjl it in your heart to make it, for I want to live to get out and kill the last member of the board that gave such a blankety, blankety, segregated, all around idiot and son of a gun as he a commission to practice law." |
