Show LOOKING FOR LUCRE. The campaign, so far as it has progressed, has been about the tamest and least impressive affair in the history of local politics. At Democratic headquarters the few spectral figures who invade the party sanctum walk on tiptoe and converse in whispers. Many of the familiar fa-miliar faces of the old chiefs are missing in the Atlas block secloister. Bob Sloan is away from the city, the genial Billy Dale has been notably absent, and the sibilant accents of Simon Bamberger have not yet reverberated through the lonesome corridors. cor-ridors. When Chairman Martineau creeps cautiously cau-tiously into headquarters, about the only person he encounters is a sad-visaged candidate or a worker looking for a small offering from the campaign fund which is not. All of this makes a doleful picture, but the fact which adds most gloom to the ensemble is that there has been an entire unwillingness on the part of old campaigners campaign-ers to contribute this year. It certainly seems up to some patriotic Democrat to come forward with at least enough money to finance a janitor, so that he can brush the cobwebs from the picture from which peer the august features of Mr. Jefferson. Jef-ferson. At the Republican headquarters there is a lit- tie; less evidence ,of dejection, although the are also suffering from an attack of poverty in that section. The selection of Willard Hanson as chairman of the committee has also met with some little dissatisfaction, mostly because he is without experience in the conduct of a campaign. Such enthusiasm and earnestness as have been displayed thus early in the campaign have" been confined to the American headquarters, where Chairman Darmer and his staff are working ener- . getically, and already have the preliminary details de-tails of the campaign well under way. They are fortunately not on the pauper list, and have been able to practically liquidate all the debts left over from a year ago, as well as being able to meet all current expenses without discomfort. Under these circumstances, the party leaders are able to sleep well o' nights, and everything indicates that the campaign inaugurated by the Gentiles will be irresistible this year. |
