Show THAT SIDEWALK FAME. The Herald supplies its readers with " a blue print of the increased miles of sidewalk' under Mayor Morris. That is what makes us laugh. To secure the laying of sidewalks the property-owners property-owners along the several blocks where a sidewalk side-walk is desired have to petition to have the work done, then there has to be time given to enable any property-owner who may not want the improvement im-provement to protest. When all is done then the sidewalk is ordered by the council, and then it often requires six months to induce the city to proceed with the work. When finished it is charged up against the property-owners and is a lien "upon the property of each propertyr-owner until paid. , To prevent . individuals from putting m their own walks, all contractors are forbidden to lay walks until a permit is obtained, and"that costs, we undertsand, $6.50. Out of all this to figure out why His Honor the Mayor, is entitled to special credit, is only possible with such mathematicians as make up the Herald staff, and then the outsider is at a loss to know whether the figures come from real mathematics or from the imagination of the compiler of the figures, or whether it is a mere figure of speech. In this campaign the Herald seems to be much in the same fix that the man was who received orders from his wife to spank the baby. There was no outcry for some time when the impatient wife in a sharp voice asked why the husband and father did not spank that baby, when in a muffled tone the poor man responded: "D d if I can find any place big enough to spank." By the way how much have the taxes been increased in-creased under Mayor Morris, and why the increase? |
