Show WHY NOT COMBINE 7 Certainly no fair-minded man or woman will object ob-ject that the Gentiles of this city are seeking to concentrate their strength against the political power wielded by the dominant church leaders here. All through the late conference speaker after speaker referred to those who were not of their organization as "enemies." Not long since Joseph Jos-eph F. Smith himself advised the flock to not sell their lands to outsiders and added that he had never yet sold any land to any Gentile, and only last week one of the wives of the president of the church advised poor girls not to accept situations t in Gentile families because, though the remuneration remunera-tion was greater, the influences vere bad. With President Smith and Professor Talmage frothing at the mouth, with Golden Kimball covertly threatening war, with the leading women of the harems trying to prevent poor girls from accepting accept-ing fair wages from Gentiles, with every business busi-ness house closed against Gentile employees; with a steady boycott insidiously taught and practiced against Gentiles, with the perpetual effort to drown free speech and stifle free thought, and the steady, never-ending effort to build up a kingdom resting on polygamy and carried on with perpetual per-petual tyranny, why should not free-born American Ameri-can citizens combine and protest against this mighty usurpation and never-ceasing injustice? Here in Salt Lake the Gentiles own more than half the taxable property; throughout the state the money Gentiles have supplied has made the prop- erty values; had they never come here Ut-h I wouid simply now be a great stock range, the I homes would be harems and the people at large would know no more of the glorified free govern-I govern-I meot of the United States than they did when the locomotives touched noses at Promontory in I 1869. The transformation has been made by Gen- . tile brains, Gentile industry and Gentile money. Why should they not combine and by every . I legitimate means fight this enemy of free govern-H govern-H ment and the inalienable rights of mankind? The Mormons can point to no wrong ever done them by the Gentiles here. This long strug- gle for free institutions has been no wrong, but raher a sacred duty; they have broken no H pledges, no covenants, they have done their full part in making Utah the place it at present is, and the only reproach that the robbers of the dominant church can hurl against them is that they are genuine Americans and are trying to build up an American state. Why should they not combine? Why should they not seek through their ballots to enter a Stern protest against this tyrranous rule, that on the wreck of free thought is building up its despotism des-potism here? Three tickets are in the field. Two of them would retire in fifteen minutes were the hope of church support taken from them. Why then should any American hesitate how to vote? With either a Democratic or Republican mayor and council elected, we will have for two years to come what we have experienced for two years past Does any genuine American want that? |
