Show I. REPUBLICAN DISCONTENT. I W ...If Ezra Thompson fulfills the fervent expec- . JHf tations of his supporters by vanquishing Lynch 1 wl Jind Morris in ,the municipal melee of this year, Ji the jubilation will not be confined to members of J II the party for which he is carrying the mayoralty guidon. There will be a joyful and sonorous H chuckle from that division of the Republican Wh party which for two years has been fighting I i 1; .against the dictatorial supremacy in the party of I I j Smoot and his deft lieutenants, j M This does not refer to those who are in open j , j 'revolt, but to the quasi-belligcrents who are wil- 'In ling to swallow the Smoot opiate once more and I T support the Republican ticket this fall. This feel- F i ing of hostility toward that element in the party 1; "wds greatly augmented at the late Republican j 11 k "convention, when the Smoot slate went through j ;w 'entire, except for the single fracture inflicted by i , - ii the nomination of Mr. Vigus. ' ' , Si It is felt by the independent Republicans that Iff if Mr. Thompson is elected, the victory will be a j P crushing blow to Callister and Anderson, and will ! i .practically signalize the end of their- domination j ; I j of- local Republican politics. That would mean a ; I readjustment of the Republican forces next year, I ) when the independent forces would be in a position posi-tion .to. demand a new deal, and might be power- ? ful enough to release the local organization from I s "the Anderson-Callister clutches. At least, that is ffi what the independents are hoping for, and the 1 i Selection of Mr. Thompson offers the only solu- j j jtioh of the present factional differences in the t j I jjparty. ; f "i Recent gatherings of the party leaders and "workers have served to emphasize this startling 1 disaffection, and the Smoot people are now thor- , , 1 1 oughly alarmed. It is stated that, in order to pre- , : I! 'vent the spread, of this sentiment, Callister and 1 II j 'Anderson will be requested to remain in the f- background during the coming campaign, as it is feared that Lynch will be sacrificed if they, insist on projecting themselves prominently into the campaign. The extent of this opposition to Smoot control con-trol is shown in the fact that scarcely one of the independent Republicans can be impressed into active service on behalf of Lynch. With this extensive ex-tensive wing of the Republican party giving the party nominee only a semi-support, discouragement discourage-ment is plainly visible among the leaders of what remains of the fragmentary following of the regular regu-lar organization. |
