Show The last indictment against President Roose- M velt is his extravagance. The additions to the M White House, $650,000, are charged up to him. H The fact about that was that the cramped quar- H ters of the executive had been a crying shame H for years. The best thought was that some slight H additions should be made, enough to make it a com- M fortable domicile for the Chief Magistrate, and H that a -now- structure should be built, not too far l from the White House, for offices for tie trans- action of executive business. But this was abafr H doned and the hideous additions to the White H House were ordered. This was while Mr. McKin- H ley was President. Now a new stable is needed :H and the President's plan Is for one to cost $90,000. H That is a good deal for a stable, but It is not one- ' jH fifth what the stables of each of several private iH individuals in this country cost, and were it to H be put under construction now it would not be completed before the President's term would ex- M pire. |
