Show THE GIBBS- M'CARTY DRAW. II The Gibbs-McCarty fight on Thuisday night j was a haul game contest from start to finish, and the best entertainment in sporting circles seen Iiere for many days. Science did not trouble either contestant much, but it was a fight for blood from the stroke of the gong, and both of the men made many friends among the sporting element, which is not in the habit of seeing a fair fight in this city. f There is ' very little doubt that the colored I boy can whip McCarthy, though the Irishman I outpointed him all through the contest. Gibbs is not so aggressive, and he saves himself, waiting j an opportunity for a sneak blow, and either of lj the two he landed, the first on the stomach, or ' I the other square on the jaw would have given him the decision, but for the gong. McCarthy is I the gamest kind of a rooster, though, and his ability to revive quickly is wondenul. His quick recuperation was wonderful, and considering the weakened condition of both men, I the finish was strong. Giubs has a nasty left which is inclined to strike suspiciously low, but the fight was clean and straight and a most satisfactory exhibition. Great credit is due the management, particularly partic-ularly Mr. McGinnis. |
