In ESCALANTE (B), the DUP museum is located one door south of Griffin's grocery store in the old tithing office, one of the first buildings ever built in Escalante. Many beautiful pictures in their oringinal frames adorn its walls and many fine artifacts portraying life in early Escalante are displayed. Visitors may ask at either grocery store and the gracious owners will contact Jan Lis ton at 820-4242 or Hilda Roundy at 826-4288. Both ladies maintain the museum and gladly open it for visitors to Escalante. All members of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers are descended from ancestors who came to Utah before the railroad. Their purpose is to preserve the history and relics of early Utah. They collect unpublished manuscripts of members' histories which are submitted to the central organization in Salt Lake City where they are compiled com-piled into lesons for use at meetings of the DUP. The various DUP "camps" located all over the state meet regularly and participate par-ticipate actively in all activities ac-tivities that endeavor to recognize and preserve early Utah history. Three pioneer museums in Garfield County offer a wide array of artifacts which tell the vivid story of the early days of the county and the hardships of its settlers. Maintained and operated by members of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, each museum is as uniquely different as the settlers of its particular area. In PANGUTTCH (A), the museum is located in the old bishop's storehouse on East Center Street. A colorful sign invites the traveler to spend some time going through the interesting collection. It is open from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. daily except Sunday during the summer months. Pioneer pictures, furniture, fur-niture, dishes, handiwork, early organs, music, mid-wives' mid-wives' bags, wedding dresses, weapons and many other interesting artifacts 'may be seen in the museum. In HATCH (A), the museum is located in the community building and maintained by ' Velma Huntington, 735-4205; Estella Riggs, 735-4205; and Effel Riggs, 735-4287. These three ladies will be willing to open the museum for anone who would like to see its contents. More than two large rooms of artifacts may be seen.
