Show County Creatures Marmot The seldom-seem yellow-bellied yellow-bellied marmot is the largest ground dwelling rodent native to the Southwest Named for its yellow belly, the marmot is a stocky animal with brownish, yellow-tipped fur. It has a dark face with white between bet-ween its eyes and a long bushy tail. It belongs to the ground-squirrel ground-squirrel family, resembles a rat and has teeth like a squirrel, it feeds on insects, . leaves and roots. The marmot digs a large burrow with two entrances and hibernates during the winter. Its burrows are usually found under rock-piles rock-piles or around rock outcropping out-cropping in meadows. As it suns and cleans itself, it watches for enemies. It expels an explosive warning whistle when frightened. The marmot is related to the prairie dog. |
