Show Enrollment Tops State Average in 1 3 Classes I Garfield School District has eight elementary school classes with 25 or more students and S elementary classes with 30 or more students, according to Utah Education Association survey. The district's average class size is 25.70 students as compared with an average statewide for the six grades of 27.24. The survey shows that the district's kindergarten class size average is 25.00 students as compared com-pared with 26.02 statewide; first grade, 22.67 students (25.39 statewide); second grade, 22.00 students (26.11 statewide); third grade, 25.00 students (27.25 statewide); fourth grade, 40.00 students (29.13); and fifth grade, 39.00 students (29.56). "Averages don't tell the entire 1 story, though," UEA president Hurley Hansen said. "They only show a mid-point, and many classes are far larger than the average. Our survey shows that once again many elementary classes are far too large." The UEA statewide class siz survey was taken in public schools Oct. 1, when teachers were asked tQ report enrollment totals from theif official rollbooks on that date. Class size statistics were collected from all but 15 of the 421 elementary schools in the state. Utah has had the largest class sizes in the nation for years. Utah's statewide average elementary class size crept upward from the level in last year's UEA survey from 27.07 students to 27.09 students this year. 1 The UEA survey shows that 3,260 of 4,630 classes . in elementary grades have 25 or more students. A ! total of 1,856 elementary classes (25.6 per cent) in the state have 30 to 34 students, according to the survey. ' |
