Show i i Candidates For Municipal Office Must File By Aug. 15 It's time for those seeking municipal offices throughout the county to officially declare their candidacy. Deadline is Aug. 15 to file with local clerks. Mayoral positions and at least two council seats will be open in each community. In Panguitch, the term of Mayor Jon Torgerson is up as well as the terms of council members Mack Oetting and Denny Orton. Oetting has filed for the mayor's seat as well as Leland Pollock. The city recorder is Shirley Chidester. In Escalante, Mayor Marjie Spencer's term is up along with the terms of council members Chris Christensen and Don Porter. City recorder is Vickie Schulkoski. Mayor Jean Seiler's term will be up in Tropic where the council seats of Reed LeFevre and Sandrea Francisco also terminate. Town clerk is Marie Niemann. In Boulder, the term of Mayor Keith Gailey ends and the four-year seats of Gladys LeFevre and Farlan Behunin and the two-year term of Mark Nelson who was appointed to fill a vacancy on the council. Town clerk is Judy Davis. In Cannonville, Mayor Al Stone's term is up, as well as those of Joe Hughes and Tom Shakespeare. Shake-speare. In Henrieville, terms of Mayor Thor Johnson and council members Kenneth Piatt and Deanna Patterson are up. Town clerk is Lisa Chynoweth. Antimony and Hatch clerks were unavailable. Unless otherwise noted, all are four-year positions. A qualified resident of the municipality can become a candidate for office by completing a "Declaration of Candidacy" for himself or by having another resident of the municipality gather signatures on a Nomination Petition. Each person seeking to become a candidate for a non-partisan (See CANDIDATES on page 7-A) CANDIDATES From Front Page municipal office shall file a declaration of candidacy form in person with the city recorder or town clerk during office hours and not later than 5 p.m., and pay the filing fee, if one is required by municipal ordinance. The petition form must also be filed during the period, Qualifications for a candidate are 10-3-301; 20A-9-203 Be a United States citizen. Be a registered voter of the municipality. Be a resident of the community or recently annexed area for a period of 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the date of the election. If elected from a council district, the person must be a resident of the council district. If the number of candidates for a particular municipal office does not exceed twice the number of persons needed to fill that office, a primary election for that office will not be held and the candidates are considered nominated. 20A-9-40-4(2) Immediately after expiration of the period for filing a declaration of candidacy or petition, the clerk or recorder shall cause the"' names of the candidates as they will appear on the ballot to be published in at least two successive publications of a newspaper with general circulation in the municipality 20A-9-203(6) Up to 23 days before, the election, a candidate may withdraw by filing a written affidavit with the clerk. To become a valid write-in candidate, for a first, second or third class city election, a person must file a "Declaration of Candidacy" form with the city recorder not later than 14 days before the November election. Write-in candidates for towns are not required to file a "Declaration of Candidacy." |
