Runners from all three Garfield County schools participated in the 1-A State Crosscountry Cross-country competition last week. Runners From Three High Schools Take Wins At State 1A Finals By Eric Jessen Runners from all three Garfield County high schools performed commendably at State 1A Cross Country finals held Wednesday, Oct. 17 at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City. In fact, all of Region 15 showed well at state, having six of the first top nine runners where 71 runners participated in 1' joinpetilion. Escalante High School's Setli Steed took first place, finishing the three-mile course in 16: 13; a full 15 seconds ahead of the second sec-ond place runner. Bryce Valley's Levi LeFevre captured 5th place, improving on last year's 9th place win as a freshman. Chase Englestead of Panguitch High School took 8th place honors. hon-ors. Bryce Valley's Brady Shakespear placed 41st on his first-ever state run. Both he and LeFevre are sophomores. Bryce Valley's runners earned the right to compete at state by finishing in the top 10 individually at Region 15 competition com-petition two weeks ago at the golf course at Mt. Carmel Junction, where the team took 5th place. Both Escalante and Panguitch, whose teams placed among the top four at Region, earned the right to take full boys teams to state. From Escalante there were Seth Steed, 1st place; Scott Beebe, 16th place; Spencer Rex, 37th place; Mike Spencer, 40th place; Justin Christensen, 45th place; Kade Coombs, 50th place and James Crawford, 68th place. Escalante placed 5th overall as a team. The Panguitch Bobcats placed in the following order, lead by Chase Englestead with 8th place; Jason Dalton, 34th place, Mitch Owens, 38th place; Devin Dalton, 43rd place; Stuart Mitchell, 43rd place; Mykel Walsh, 48th place and Tyler Barney, 60th place. Panguitch placed 7th overall as a team. Academically, Bryce Valley's Preston Clarke earned the honors hon-ors of academic all-state as did Seth Steed, Mike Spencer, James Crawford- and Brandi Cox of Escalante High School. Region 15 had an outstanding showing in academics, with nine of the 10 individuals taking academic aca-demic all-state coming from Region 15 and four of those coming from Garfield County schools. Escalante High School's Aruil LeFevre was the lone local girl running in the competition compe-tition and took 5th place, doing a great job, placing individually in the girls competition. |
