Show Municipal Election Candidates Speak Out Candidates running for office in the upcoming municipal munici-pal elections on Nov. 6 were invited by the Garfield County News to submit a statement of 300 words or less setting forth their views regarding vital issues relative to the office they are seeking. We think you '11 be interested in what they have to say... BOULDER Kevin Eastman Mayor Candidate 4-Year Term I want to thank the Garfield County News for inviting me to express my views on issues concerning con-cerning Boulder Town. I am run-ning for mayor of Boulder with the hope of implementing the desires of the majority of the people. I have no agenda to implement. If elected, I would set aside my own views and listen lis-ten to the people who live here. I will try to simplify the ordinances ordi-nances and unify the town to a more peaceful co-existence. Keith Gailey Mayor Candidate 4-Year Term I am seeking reelection as Boulder Town Mayor. During four years as mayor, I was instrumental in obtaining a $150,000 grant to purchase the new fire truck. Coordination with the Fire Department has resulted in upgraded equipment and a $80,000 grant to build a firehouse addition for all of our emergency vehicles. I initiated an Emergency Response Squad that includes skilled EMTs, trained Firemen, and a dedicated Search and Rescue Team. Boulder is now fully staffed and equipped to handle any emergency. Countless workshops on the Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument have been attended. Each of the meetings required extensive study and research in order to represent Boulder's interests effectively. The town Cemetery is now securely under local control. I have worked together with the council and county officials to harmoniously bring about many more effective improvements. The present Town Council and I initiated an ongoing review of all ordinances to assure that they each meet State and Federal legal compliance. This groundwork will allow-future allow-future Town Councils to make better decisions. My future goals as Boulder Mayor: Work with council members mem-bers to complete the park south of the Town Hall on land we obtained from the BLM. Work toward lowering the fire insurance rates and making our town more attractive to insurance companies. Work to insure that we preserve pre-serve the rural atmosphere and lifestyle that we enjoy throughout through-out projected residential and commercial growth. As a Utah native who served as Naval Chief Pharmacist Mate during World War II, I know about service and dependability. As owner of a farm equipment store and two successful full coverage insurance agencies for over 40 years, I am qualified to guide the growing business of Boulder Town. I would appreciate your support sup-port at the polls. D. Farlan Behuniri Council Candidate 4-Year Term I have served on the Boulder Town Council for the past four years. During that four years, my main focus has been revolved around providing a better transportation system for our community and those who may visit or pass through. I have tried to listen to various individuals who may or may not want their roads improved and responded accordingly. In the near future I would like to see the cemetery parking lot paved along with any other roads that may need improving within the town. Being born and raised in Boulder, I believe agriculture and open space must be preserved pre-served because once it is gone, we can never get it back. I have, and hope to continue, to support large lots and an overall wisely planned community. I would like to continue to serve the residents of Boulder as a member of the City Council for another four-year term. I have always tried to understand both sides of every issue and supported what I thought to be the right course of action. I commit to the citizens of Boulder, that should I be reelected, re-elected, I will listen to every concern and viewpoint, regardless regard-less of the issue and base my decisions on facts, not hearsay or emotion keeping the entire community in mind. A vote for me on November 6th is a vote to preserve Boulder's quality of life. Randy Catmull Council Candidate 4-Year Term This is a letter to the citizens of Boulder Town - Since moving to Boulder some 21 years ago, I have seen many changes in the community and no doubt will see many more. Some of the reasons I felt it necessary to run for the four-year four-year council seat here in Boulder Town are as follows: It's the responsibility of the citizens of Boulder to elect to office the individuals that reflect the needs of the people and the business in the community. I agree we need ordinances in the town but what level of enforcement of restrictions do we want to impose on our lives. I think that government role should be to meet the needs of the community and still provide a desired direction for the town to continue to grow. When an ordinance requires enforcement, it should be equally equal-ly applied without any personal feelings or beliefs. There is a need for smaller lots in town. This would make it affordable for our children and new families to be able to live here. This would insure availability of help for the business busi-ness and to fill the needs of the Towns volunteer boards such as town council, planning commission, commis-sion, board of adjustments, fire department, search and rescue and emergency medical technicians. techni-cians. There is a need for the community com-munity to become involved in the decision making of the town, by attending town meeting, meet-ing, planning commission meetings meet-ings and to express their opinion on the decisions. I know this takes time out of their lives but the end results is a community that is a good place to live. Gladys LeFevre Council Candidate 2-Year Term "Your right to swing your-fists your-fists ends where my nose begins!" None of us likes rules and we all wish that we didn't have to keep making more rules. Unfortunately, we all want to be able to swing our fists and we're not sure where the other "feller's" nose begins (or ends). The hardest part of being on the Town Board is keeping all those fists and noses in line. My goal as a member of the Town Council would be to help you find ways to keep swinging your fist without having it come in contact with someone else's nose. Not so much emphasis on what you can't do, but work on ways to help you accomplish what you want and still follow the rules we have established. Each of us is important arsl we all have certain rights. Let's hope we can each figure out where the other "feller's" nose is so we don't need all these "rules." CANNONVILLE pWfSSS1' "'PW ' --'fstr.v.v, - - - - - - I': P. :i Alma Fletcher Mayor Candidate 4-Year Term As candidate for mayor of Cannonville, let me begin by expressing my appreciation for the excellent job our outgoing mayor, Al Stone, has done for Cannonville Town the past four years. Cannonville is a great place to live.. .the scenery, the quiet small town atmosphere, the good people, and the improvements improve-ments that have been made in the community as a whole, the cleaner yards and streets, the pressurized irrigation system, the nice town park, the improvement improve-ment to our culinary water system, sys-tem, the new town building and more. Together we can maintain this lifestyle while encouraging reasonable growth. Some specific spe-cific projects we need to look at are: solving the drainage problem prob-lem in town (since the irrigation ditches have been eliminated); improving the park's playground play-ground equipment, and continuing continu-ing to improve the cleanliness of our town. Striving to achieve good communications between citizens and town government is very important. If elected, I will work at it. We are facing a critical time in our Nation and in the World, we have been given a wonderful heritage as citizens of our great Nation, and we must be willing to do our part to maintain the freedoms we have been afforded. afford-ed. I am grateful for having -been a part of Cannonville for many years, and would like to do my part in maintaining and moving forward our community Joe Thompson Council Candidate 4-Year Term Old Cannonville, we want you back! Yes, we have a nice new town office and water system, sys-tem, but in obtaining them we went from Cannonville Town to Cannonville Bank! Our property tax rate was already extremely high, then water rates went up 100 percent, excess water rates 800 percent and water connections almost 900 percent. We watch our water run down the creek because we can't afford it anymore. any-more. We complained, so our mayor refused to allow us on the agenda for Town Council meetings, meet-ings, effectively silencing his opposition. At a public hearing, we saw our mayor and two councilmen out-vote the other two council-men, council-men, and all of the citizens who were expressing their opposition. opposi-tion. We scrambled as our mayor, claiming that it cost the town too much money; denied financial finan-cial support and tried to end the traditional Fiddlers Bear Festival which supports our scout troop. We witnessed a personal attack against local businesses to get more money and harassment harass-ment if they didn't comply. Our mayor blocked certain streets with his pickup to create his own truck route and assessed special high water rates to businesses busi-nesses that fought back, all without council approval. Utah has no recall law, so it's up to the council to harness a loose cannon. We have witnessed wit-nessed what can happen when they don't. As a result, we now have six potential lawsuits against our town. I love this town; I was a councilman for five years and operated our water system for 20 years. As a council member. I will work with the new mayor to make council meetings friendly again, to make water affordable, business (which provides an important and much-needed tax base) welcome, and to repeal a zoning ordinance that threatens the homes of 18 of our families. Remember to vote on Tuesday. ESCALANTE j j 1 J Marjie Lee Spencer Mayor Candidate 4-Year Term Serving others has been something I've done all my life. From that service, (teaching school 28 years, being a "farmer's wife" 41 years), I've gained experience, insight, compassion, com-passion, and knowledge that have aided me as Mayor. I'm eager to continue. The past two years, I've become even more proud as I've seen people working hard to make an even better place to live and raise a family. (I know they've worked hard because I've worked beside them, having hav-ing occasion to work every position posi-tion of our city). Significant goals I previously set as Mayor have been accomplished, accom-plished, other goals are in progress and some need to be set in motion. I'm proud to report a "balanced budget" for Escalante. The CommunitySenior Citizen Center is a beautiful, much appreciated and utilized facility. (It took the work and cooperation coopera-tion of many to accomplish the renovation). New cement sidewalks side-walks at 100 West 100 North have enhanced the landscaping that's been done and increased safety and access for citizens. Additional water sources have been acquired and new roof coverings done for three city buildings. If elected, my goals and com mitments include continued and improved street maintenance, lighting, parks, buildings. I want to see the current law enforcement arrangement stabilized. stabi-lized. I will work for funding for the new Firehouse and assist with the airport building. I'll work to utilize revenues even more effectively and continue to coordinate employeecity relationships. rela-tionships. Serving as Mayor takes a lot of time if done properly. I have the time AND I'm willing to give that time. The past two years I've learned a great deal about leadership and management. manage-ment. I've worked with an awesome awe-some Council, and I believe we can continue in the direction of positive progress. I'll appreciate appreci-ate an opportunity to serve again; your vote will allow me L - ' r - 1 L,, t . 1 U' ., . ,j I . J v .. . . V:V". 'i to do that. Lenza Wilson Mayor Candidate 4-Year Term When elected six years ago to the . Escalante City Council, I made improving city utilities my priority. We completely . rebuilt the water collection system sys-tem and many of the water distribution dis-tribution lines in town, funded and designed improvements to the sewer treatment ponds and obtained funds to replace the Alvey Wash bridge. When appointed mayor for the last year of my term, I proposed pro-posed budget cuts to reduce the need for property tax increases and worked to make ordinances and departments, including . Planning and Zoning, more practical and useful for citizens. I have served as council member, mayor, mayor pro tern, city water manager, planning and zoning commissioner, and water conservancy district director. I have worked for the 'Utah Legislature and I am completing com-pleting a degree from the University of Utah in political . science and government administration. admin-istration. I am self-employed, which gives me the time needed to serve. If elected, my priority will be to focus on the vital services the city provides including water, sewer, streets, and emergency services. I will work with the council to prioritize expenses and improve efficiency and support sup-port cutting wasteful spending to offset the need for tax increases and to build up funds for major projects. I will support sup-port and promote all of our businesses busi-nesses in the area to maintain a strong diversified economy. Citizens should be free to conduct con-duct their affairs with as little government intrusion as possible possi-ble and I will oppose any attempt to reduce rights and responsibilities. I will work to manage and limit new residential residen-tial growth so that it will not be subsidized by existing residents. My views, (See STATEMENTS on pg 5-A) STATEMENTS From Page 4-A opinions and questions are very simple and to the point. My politically correct statement is, "I will listen to all of your concerns." con-cerns." Of course I will, but let me state where I stand so you know up front; 1 . Equal treatment for all regardless re-gardless of who you are. 2. Stop micro-managing the employees. If someone is supervi-sor, let himher supervise. super-vise. Dialog is the key. 3. Pay the city employees a fair, decent and livable wage. The City's reputation is only as good as its employees, it's ambassadors. 4. SUPPORT public safety. If you don't want a ticket, don't break the law. If you do break the law, DON'T CRY. 5. Support the Main Street Project. 6. Support Hwy. 12 Projects. 7. Support local business; help them survive and attract new busi-nesses instead of hindering hin-dering them. 8. Develop the Flaming Gorge Water Rights instead of buying other water rights at $6,000 per share. 9. Put in the new Wide Hollow Reservoir. 10. Keep the character of Esca-lante intact. Our seniors are this city's most valuable assets for pres-ervation. In the past two years, I have to wonder what has happened to this town. The police situation is comical. Would you work for someone who tells you constantly con-stantly "I'm going to fire you!"? Well, then, why should the city employees? I would be only one vote on the City Council, but that vote would be for common sense, fairness and what is BEST for all citizens, not just a chosen few. I '1' I L-L a Emilee Lott Write-In Council Candidate 4-Year Term My life-long dream to live in Escalante "full-time" has come ' true! I'm finally here and I love it. Even though Escalante's demographics are constantly changing, her character remains the same. She shines with reflections and scars of the past yet radiates with promises promis-es for the future. That combined light encourages us on and prompts us to dig in and each do our part to maintain the values that have made Esclante great. My heritage is here; I see the prints of my grandparents, my great-grandparents, and their parents in the profile of this community and what it represents. repre-sents. They worked hard in their livelihoods; they served their church and community; they sacrificed, hoping and building for us for their posterity. poster-ity. We are here (I am here) now; we can't (I can't) let them down especially when I, too, believe in the values and character charac-ter that have gotten us here. I am committed to preserving our Western heritage our Escalante lifestyle; to maintaining maintain-ing and enhancing those things we know make us a happy and help us shine. We must change (that is life) but I believe change can be managed MUST be managed by those who are directly involved with that change, and change processes can be directed direct-ed and molded into win-win results for all. I'm proud to be an Escalantan! I'm proud of our city and what it represents! I want to promote city pride in all; I believe city pride will enhance "city unity." I believe in the concepts of "synergy!!" even though we're small in numbers we can accomplish 4 great things if we're all working as a team. I want to work with the City "team" that listens to and acts for the good of Escalante and Escalante's people! peo-ple! I'm willing to listen; to learn; to work. HATCH Kevin Eldredge Mayor Candidate 4-Year Term Over 100 years ago a few of my ancestors along with several other stalwart men, settled this beautiful little area of Hatch. There are many of us in these latter days that share similar dreams as those of our forefathers. forefa-thers. The wonderful citizens of Hatch have endured many hardships hard-ships over the past 100 plus years, rebuilding the town several sev-eral times from flood and finally final-ly relocating the town center are only a few of the many trials our community has endured. My platform is simply finding find-ing the correct, moral solution to each issue that arises. This new millennium brings with it a variety of new challenges. As a community we need to have a plan in place in order to meet these new challenges. Growth is inevitable. As your mayor, I feel that because of many experiences that I have had in the past, I would be able to lead our community com-munity through the challenges that will be facing us. Let us band together as a community as we look forward to dealing with our new trials and at the same time preserving our rich heritage. Your vote for Kevin Eldredge as mayor will be greatly appreciated appre-ciated on Nov. 6. Nikki Feit Council Candidate 4-Year Term Hello, I am Nikki Feit and I moved to Hatch three years ago. For the last two years I have worked at Garkane Energy while helping my husband-to-be, Tony Dinges, at his business Tony's Outpost. I enjoy learning new things and meeting new people. I have decided to run for town council because I want to be a part of the decision-making process that affects our small town. I would like to see Hatch remain a small, quiet place, ideal for raising families, while at the same time adapting to the changing world around us. Please put your confidence con-fidence in me to be a representative representa-tive of Hatch. Vote for me on Nov. 6. PANGUITCH Janet Oldham Mayor Candidate 4-Year Term The City of Panguitch is my home and I love the community, the people and the rural life I live here. I have a business in the community and with hard work, I will watch it grow over the next few years. The future of Panguitch is important to me, not just for business purposes, but also for my children, their .spouses and my grandchildren. As Mayor, I will work in four main areas: 1. The tourism industry, to capture more of the market. 2. The full time jobs with benefits with the computer and the internet are very real possibilities. possi-bilities. 3. The retention of business and expansion. 4. The recruitment of business busi-ness that is vital to the community. commu-nity. Panguitch is ready for the 21st Century, we may as well use that to our advantage. But there is al-ways more work to be done and I would like to help Panguitch City with that work as the Mayor. I promise you that I will listen lis-ten to your ideas for Panguitch and would like to hear from you about where you would like to see Pan-guitch four years from now and what areas you feel are not getting the attention that they need. Please feel free to call or come see me with your ideas and concerns. Cindy Taylor Stewart Mayor Candidate 4-Year Term My name is Cindy Taylor Stewart and I am running for the office of Panguitch City Mayor. I am seeking office because I believe a more conservative approach needs to be taken with regards to spending of City funds. We are moving into a time of unstable economy, war and an unknown future. Our tax revenues are going to be down, affecting monies available to service our current debt on the CCC Arena and any projects in our future. We have got to tighten the purse strings; be responsible spenders. I believe we need to take an aggressive approach to economic econom-ic development. The first step being the retention and support of the businesses we already have. These are individuals who have put their financial neck's on the line to be in business busi-ness in Panguitch. Second, we need to bring more business to the area. We need to realize that we are in competition with the entire State for businesses looking look-ing to relocate. Attracting new business will be an uphill struggle, strug-gle, but a struggle that will be a priority. I want to have a close working work-ing relationship with the County police force, making sure Panguitch has the best police coverage possible. I want a daily, hands-on relationship rela-tionship with the City manager and office staff. I want to be up-to-speed and involved with the affairs of the City. I have four years City Council, one year school board and decades of'business experience. experi-ence. I have the time, dedication, dedica-tion, desire and abilities to be an extremely effective public servant. ser-vant. I have a deep affection for Panguitch and it's citizens. Above everything, I want to give those citizens the voice in City government they want and deserve. I would appreciate your support Nov. 6. Together we can insure a sound future for Panguitch Citv. Eric Houston Council Candidate 4-Year Term I am Eric Houston and I am running for Panguitch City Council in hopes of becoming more involved and giving something some-thing back to the community. Raised in Panguitch, the son of John and Diane Houston, I went to college for. four years, then married Tamara Baldwin and returned home in 1997 to buy a motel. I would like to focus my term on improving the economy of Panguitch. Although there are other issues that need to be taken into consideration, none are as important as bringing in quality jobs. The economy of Panguitch has declined in recent years. The tourism and logging industries, once the lifeblood of Panguitch have declined in recent years. As a community, we need to reach out and bring industry into our city. Tourism is still alive in Panguitch, but it is as a passing through point, rather than' a place to come and see. We need to make Panguitch a destination. I also believe it is extremely important to use our tax money wisely and frequently re-evaluate those areas. We need to look at Main Street and other programs pro-grams and continually improve upon them. The resort tax is dedicated for the time being to the Triple C Arena, so for now we cannot lift it; however, in the future my hope is that we will generate enough revenue that we can eventually relieve that tax burden. I am also committed to maintaining main-taining the safety of our com munity, that is one of the reasons rea-sons I chose to live and raise my children here. I work at the Garfield County Correctional Facility in Panguitch, where I am a shift commander. I volunteer volun-teer my time maintaining the safety of this community on a regular basis. I look forward to serving and supporting the people of Panguitch if elected. Denny Orton Council Candidate 4-Year Term I am running for a second term for city council because of my love for our community and the people who live here. Serving has made me aware of several important issues we must deal with in the next four years. Most deal with spending. Please let me share these thoughts with you. With our sluggish economy we must tighten our belts and plan our spending to fit our income. Simply balance our budget. I will ask for and settle for nothing less. ' Our city departments have already been asked to cut spending spend-ing by ten percent. This is a good start. There is s big difference differ-ence between wants and needs. They must be defined and addressed and the wants set aside until we enjoy a better economy. Citizens must get more involved in issues. Public hearings hear-ings is a good start. On Nov. 13 we will discuss upgrading part of our culinary water system. Your input would mean a lot to me in making any decisions on this or any spending. For anyone who may have questions on spending.. .1 have recently implemented an updated updat-ed monthly accounting of all income and expenditures of the new Triple C Arena, SoftballBaseball Complex, and our one percent resort tax. This makes it easy for all to gain this information. We must work hard to develop devel-op the facilities we now have to build our economy and look for ways to help our business people peo-ple and citizens make a decent living by increasing industries and tourist trade. If elected, I will try to do what is right and what is best for all to keep Panguitch a nice, safe uHd affordable place to raise our children and grandchildren. Thank you for your past support and I would ask for your support again on Nov. 6. . -i Leland F. Pollock Council Candidate 4-Year Term My name is Leland Pollock and I have lived in Panguitch and owned my own business for the past seventeen years. My wife, Michelle and I have three children, Derick, 15, Tyler, 12 and Shelby, 10. My family is everything to me and I am both fortunate and blessed to have them. Family is a big part of ' what Panguitch is about. I was amazed at the 2000, July 24th celebration. That in itself proved to me it is not only what is happening now that is important, but equally what has happened in the past. We have an obligation to live up to our heritage. Panguitch is a good place to live and to raise a family. fami-ly. You can open a Salt Lake Tribune any day and see why it is better to live here. If elected, I will work hard for Panguitch. I have been able to survive in business for 17 years and would not have been able to do so without local support. sup-port. Now, it is my turn to give back. If I did not believe I could help Panguitch, I would not be asking for your vote. In business, I have learned from the school of hard knocks, and come out the better for it. I have learned the hard way not to mortgage my future and believe the same for Panguitch. We do not know what the future holds. That is why a conservative con-servative approach is needed. I am very aware of the support I received in the Primary. It is very much appreciated. I also know I have a duty to those who cast their vote for me. If you have a concern, I will listen and process that information. I ask for your support Nov. 6. I will not let you down. ; i Michael Savage Council Candidate 4-Year Term I have served on the Boulder Town Council for the past four years. A vote for me on November 6th is a vote to preserve Boulder's quality of life. TROPIC Wally Orton Mayor Candidate 4-Year Term I filed to serve a four year term for Mayor of Tropic for various reasons. Tropic is my home; our future. Having lived in many cities, none has the breathtaking wonders our Tropic features. We are a gateway community both coming and going to Bryce Canyon ' and the Grand Staircase. Scenic Hwy 12 is an' international transfusion to our economy and we must promote those gateways. Also, a sign on Main street would let travelers discover our beautiful city and park, picnic in its shade, stay awhile and tell others, instead of passing through at 40 mph. We must continue keeping city utilities substantial with fairness of funds. Then make sure those services are distributed distrib-uted to citizens in the same manner. As always, we need to give support and encourage our residents resi-dents that depend on cattle, horses, and agriculture crops to continue the good work. It's our heritage. (It's simply just us). Our children and schools must always remain a proud part of our community. Efforts by the existing city council have property from the BLM at a near-signing stage. These new properties would be the incentive incen-tive to plan and design a dual little lit-tle and minor league baseball complex. Our youth are all winners. Our community could rally together in providing our youth with early fundamentals in developing skills, to be winners in other ways. From conversations with Tropic citizens I have interpreted interpret-ed many positive ideas that ' (See STATEMENTS on pg 6A) : STATEMENTS From Page 5-A would be for the good of our city. No proposals seem to come out 5050. But I feel using a friendly, helpful and if possible, possi-ble, more lenient welcome adding a positive community togetherness, all citizens would benefit. I have lived only four great years in Tropic, but I feel it in me and want to help. Please vote Nov. 6. God Bless America. i j i i I '' : . ' j l , ; f - A. Jean Seiler Mayor Candidate 4-Year Term I have enjoyed and appreciated appreciat-ed the opportunity to serve these past years as your mayor in Tropic. We have been able to accomplish many of our goals including: improving the streets, beautifying our community, obtaining a bank and expanding our firehouse. . Now we have the challenge of continuing to enhance our community and quality of life. As you may recall we were able to obtain title to the BLM property prop-erty by the high school and are working with them to develop a new ball field and recreation facilities. We are also working to improve main street with better bet-ter drainage, sidewalks, new lighting and landscaping. We have a new Community Services program being developed devel-oped in Tropic and they need a permanent home. I am looking forward to serving serv-ing our community, for the next four years, and helping make more good things happen. We are working as a Town Board to plan for the future. Our challenges chal-lenges include: growth, enhancing enhanc-ing our businesses and finding economic opportunities for our families. I also want to express my appreciation for our community volunteers. We have some of the most professional and dedicated dedi-cated Fire Fighters and EMT's in all Southern Utah. We are also fortunate to work and associate asso-ciate with Town employees who take care of the day to day needs of our community, and good neighbors who are always helping help-ing and caring for one another. All of us have been affected by the events of September 11th and for the first time we have felt the threat of others wanting to restrict our freedoms. I hope we will always be mindful of the responsibility we share in protecting pro-tecting our community and the special spirit we share. By working together, supporting one another, and sharing our commitment to the future we and make great things happen. ' ' - " - s Sandrea Francisco Council Candidate 4-Year Term I have enjoyed serving the last four years on the Tropic Town Board. I feel that we have accomplished a lot of the goals that you as citizens of Tropic asked us to work on. We have a new bank., all the roads are oiled and sealed, the BLM land is now back in the town's name, we have been able to get the speed limits lowered and signs moved within the town limits. We have a lot of projects we are working on, that I would like to see finished. Important are our Main Street project, more water storage, a law officer for the town and affordable housing. hous-ing. We hope to have some of the BLM land developed with the new ball park in the spring of 2002, also the shuttle bus stops in town and to Cooks Ranch with the road oiled. We are working technology industry that will bring more income to our area. We have been able to work very well together as a Town Board and with the Bryce Valley Business Association. We also have some other committees that are helping us: the Water Study Group that is helping on new water rates; the Main Street Committee that is working on slowing down the traffic on Main street and making it a beautiful place to stop and visit and our Planning Committee, that helps with the new construction con-struction and building permits. I want to thank those who serve on these committees. I would like to encourage anyone that wants to come to Town Board that you are welcome wel-come and if you want to be involved in our committees, we would be very happy to have (See STATEMENTS on pg 7A) STATEMENTS From Page 6-A you. I would appreciate your VOTE Nov. 6 and enjoy serving on the Town Board and for you as citizens. citi-zens. Travis LeFevre Council Candidate 4-Year Term I am running for a position on the Tropic Town Council. I was born and raised in Tropic and am currently managing a motel and serving on the volunteer fire department. I would appreciate the opportunity oppor-tunity to serve you as a council member. I feel that this position is important to the future and direction of Tropic. Tropic is experiencing significant growth and change. These- changes must be handled carefully or we risk losing the small town qualities quali-ties we value. However, we must accept that change is inevitable and , attempt to make the best of new opportunities. With my business experience, I feel I can be an asset to promoting pro-moting economic growth in Tropic. I look forward to promoting pro-moting the continued beautifica-tion beautifica-tion of Tropic and upgrading Main Street to attract visitors to Tropic. These visitors, in turn, leave behind valuable tax dollars that can be used for operations and improvements in Tropic. In our arid climate, water is a concern. With new growth and construction, I see a need to monitor water supplies and look for additional sources in the future. As a council member, I would continue the work that is underway to improve the water system. The proposed affordable housing project has created concern con-cern among a great many residents resi-dents in town. It is a council member's job, as a public servant, ser-vant, to listen to all interested voices and make decisions based on public input. With the recent vandalism and speeding problems in town, I see a need for a full time deputy to help make Tropic safer and more appealing to live in. There are funds available to small municipalities through grants; I would like to see Tropic continue to utilize these sources to help accomplish these goals. Please remember to vote on Nov. 6. |
