Show Family Reading Night Kicks Off 'Community of Promise9 PANGUITCH A Family Reading Night was held at the public library in Panguitch, Wednesday, Sept. 19, as a kick off event for a series called "Community of Promise" activities. activ-ities. Thirty-five participants enjoyed the event which began with storytelling by Andrea Guillette, followed by butter-rrjaking butter-rrjaking and sampling of butter on rolls made by Blanche Pendleton and Marjorie Davies. Winners of the prize drawing of children's books were Indiana Houston, Clayton Brown and Caleb Holman. The Panguitch Community of Promise committee will continue contin-ue to offer programs throughout the year. Family Reading Nights will be held in October, January, February, March and April. A "Make a Difference Day" activity will take place Nov. 16. The goal of this event is to provide pro-vide a book for each child attending Panguitch Elementary and to have volunteers in each classroom to read one-on-one with each child. At the conclusion of the reading read-ing session, the child will be presented with a book of hisher own. Donations for the purchase pur-chase of the books are needed and can be taken to Panguitch Public Library or Panguitch Elementary School. Volunteers are also needed to read with the children at the elementary school. The Panguitch Community of Promise is part of "Utah's Promise" which is affiliated with "America's Promise," founded after the President's Summit for America's Future in April 1997 in Philadelphia. Presidents Clinton, Bush, Carter and Ford along with First Lady Nancy Reagan, representing her husband, challenged the . nation to make youth a national priority priori-ty by fulfilling Five Promises for the young, which are: 1. Ongoing relationships with caring adults in their lives -parents, mentors, tutors, or coaches. 2. ' Safe places with structured struc-tured activities during non-school non-school hours. 3. Healthy start and future. 4. Marketable skills through effective education. 5. Opportunities to give back through community service. Founding chairman, General Colin Powell has said, "America's Promise is pulling together the might of this nation to strengthen the character and competence of youth. And it's working." |
