Advertising Pays SanfordMount Button Hunting u I and Relation Information " Is the Mount Dutton area open to hunting? Yes. There are no closed areas closed other than those that were closed before the Sanford Fire. P But, please stay on designated roads and trails. Travel maps are available at Dixie National Forest pi offices. The Fremont Trail in the Right Fork of pi Sanford Creek was washed out recently by rain, but it has been cleared. What are the hazards in the area? The most prevalent hazard is snags (standing dead trees), which can fall. Be vigilant around them. 1 Flash floods are also a potential hazard. The T streams with the highest danger of flooding are Cottonwood and East Fork Hunt Creek, although J Deep, Deer, West Fork Hunt and Prospect Creeks L have also flooded. Are there any bulls left on Mount Dutton after the Sanford Fire? Yes. Although many elk were pushed down to lower elevations during the fire, they are moving within the burned area. About 50,800 acres within the 90,000-acre burn perimeter were not burned. n Aspen are sprouting and grasses have begun to n grow, providing food for elk. They are feeding r mostly along the burn edges, and many are still in : the lower-elevation juniper areas. Can we camp and have campfires? I Many unburned areas are available for dispersed camping. However, Stage 1 restrictions are in effect: campfires, including fires in an enclosed stove or grill, are allowed only in developed camp- grounds. (Stoves fueled solely by liquid petroleum " or LPG fuels are exempted from these restrictions.) Long-term weather forecasts predict a drying trend, so these restrictions will remain in effect until further -i notice. Fl- Is woodcutting allowed? Woodcutting is allowed with a permit. Follow all ; regulations. Remember that cutting standing dead trees greater than 12 inches diameter at breast height is prohibited. Place the permit tag on the 1 wood after loading; the tag must be clearly dis- 1 played while hauling the wood home. J How much wildlife died in the fire? U No carcasses of big game have been found in the burned area. Most wildlife fled the area, although n n certainly some smaller animals perished. Because 50,800 acres within the fire perimeter did not burn, there are islands where wildlife could escape the fire. The drought has had a much greater effect on wildlife than the fire. What happened to the fish? 1 Fish were killed in Deep, Deer, Cottonwood, and r Sanford Creeks, and the East Fork of the Sevier River. In some cases they were killed by the fire, in J others from floods that occurred after the fire. The U Bonneville cutthroat trout in Deep Creek were removed before flooding occurred, and will be transplanted back when the stream recovers. Brown trout will be transplanted into the East Fork of Hunt Creek next year. J xrs wit imiomi mm m a i u Y5 f povm mum wmicT I 1fUJ- S fOK MOM IIIMLWIOII CALL P 435-676-9300 |
