Show Lady Moquis Place 4th At Volleyball State Tourney By Jennifer Davis ESCALANTE The Esca-lante Esca-lante Moquis volleyball team placed 4th in state competition Saturday at Orem. After capturing a first-ever Region 15 first place the week before, the girls traveled to the state tourney at Utah Valley State College to compete for two days in some very well-played games. On Friday, the girls charged into their first game against Region 16's 5-ranked Tabiona Tigers to win 16-14, and take the second 15-10. They played their second match later in the day against Region 14's 2-ranked Salt Lake Christian Dragon Slayers. The Moquis lost their first game 15-10 but came back to win their next two games with scores of 15-8 and 15-0: On Saturday, the Lady Moquis faced Region 16's l-ranked Rich Rebels who had taken state for the previous six consecutive years. The Moquis came in and played hard, but ended up losing both games, 15-2 and 15-3, a disappointing loss for the fired up and hopeful team. The girls played their final match of the year to decide 3rd and 4th place against 2-ranked Milford Tigers whom they had beaten in Region 15 play nearly two weeks earlier at Piute. The Lady Moquis came in playing strong but lost the first game 15-13. 15-13. They came back to win the second game 15-13. The Moquis were ahead in the third game for awhile but missed serves took their toll for a final loss to the Milford Tigers in a disappointing and discouraging third game, 15-13. 15-13. The Escalante team deserves collective kudos for an outstanding out-standing season and for their Region 15 championship win that sent them to state as first place winners. Team members whose names will go down in Escalante High School's history included seniors 14 Kristy Townsend, 15 Karla Roundy, 22 Shalaine Coleman, and 43 Kandy Kelly; juniors 7 Jamie Lyman, 9 Amanda Gait, 11 Sarah Rollins, 23 Brittany Sandefer and 32 Becky Crawford; Craw-ford; and sophomore 10 Andrea Christensen. Coaches were Angie Alvey and assistant coaches were Jim Welburn and Clint Stephens. Congratulations all! |
