Show Area' Fishing 'Excellent1 In All Lakes and Streams Panguitch District Department of Wildlife Resources Conservation officer Norm McKee said that the fishing in local areas is comparable to reports of good fishing that have come from DWR officers in northern north-ern areas of the state. The reports indicated that dry weather and low run-off have created ideal fishing conditions. The state's 11 trout hatcheries will collectively stock over 300,000 catchable-sized rainbow trout in hundreds of reservoirs and streams before the Memorial Day weekend, which usually draws the biggest fishing crowds of the year. Most mid- and lower-elevation reservoirs will have been stocked with catchables at least once by then. Ice-out came early this spring on many reservoirs. Wasatch Front anglers are already enjoying open water fishing at Deer Creek and East Canyon reservoirs, both within 50 miles of Salt Lake City. Strawberry Reservoir, by far the most popular trout water in northern north-ern Utah, should be free of ice by late April, about a month ahead of schedule. Late May and June are traditionally the best months for reservoir trout fishing in Utah, but low water and above average temperatures tem-peratures this spring may force trout into deeper water by then. When that happens, trout are more difficult to catch, especially for shore fishermen. Right now, however, how-ever, hungry trout are cruising shallow waters at most reservoirs, actively feeding. Shore fishermen, using bait, often do better than boat anglers under these conditions. Northern rivers, usually swollen and muddy with runoff, are slightly high and just a little off color. These conditions are perfect for novice stream anglers because the trout are hungry and more easily fooled now than later in the season, when the water drops and becomes clear. Division of Wildlife Resources Re-sources conservation officers report excellent fishing conditions on the Logan, Blacksmith Fork, Ogden, and lower Weber and Provo rivers. Although the weather is balmy, winter fishing limits (four trout) apply on most northern trout waters wa-ters through May 27. Anglers are asked to pick up and read a 1988 fishing proclamation, available at most sporting goods store, before going fishing. |
