Show Political Party Organized At Escalante Meet ESCALANTE Eighteen people met July 8 at the Escalante Community Center to organize the Independent Party in Garfield County and to elect officers pro-tern. pro-tern. Party organizer Greg Beesley, Salt Lake City, was joined by Ed Little and Betty Christensen, also Salt Lake City, in outlining the principles and goals. "Simply stated," said Beesley, "the party supports fair taxation, better economic conditions for all Utahns, a well-run but limited government, and strong families." Elected as protem officers for the Escalante group were Art Snyder, president; Walter Bell, vice president; presi-dent; and Amber Griffin, secretary. Thev will meet again on July 26 to develop planks which they hope to see incorporated into the statewide Independent Party platform. plat-form. The platform will be decided when the party meets in convention Aug. 26 in Salt Lake City and delegates del-egates come together from all over Utah. The local group hopes to focus on issues particularly pertinent to Garfield County such as continued multiple use of public lands. They are also supportive of a proposed initiative petition to remove sales tax from food.
