Show Tornado Causes Major Damage "Dust devils" sometimes grow up to become miniature tornados. When they do they can cause considerable con-siderable damage such as the small twister that swept through Sam Allen's Ford agency Monday afternoon, passing on a southwest to northeast route. The whirlwind blew the roof off a shed in back of Allen's garage, throwing the roof willy-nilly onto and into the vehicles parked on the lot to the north. Several were damaged dam-aged including a Continental and a Chevrolet pickup parked near the Lazy J Steak House owned by John Owens. These two vehicles were thought to be the most extensively damaged but a close inspection of every vehicle ve-hicle is being conducted. Owens' steak house sustained fairly severe damage when the heavy wind lifted at the eaves of the building, rippling the roof like ocean waves. Both Allen and Owens gave rough preliminary damage estimates. esti-mates. Allen figures approximately $5,000 and Owen $3,500. On July 2 a similar wind gust took the roof off a granary belonging belong-ing to E.R. Shakespear in Tropic. Several years ago the mine timber building at Kaibab Industries in Panguitch was lifted into the air and deposited some 125 feet away. |
