Show Bryce Valley Student Is j Essay Winner CANNONVILLE Michael I Reece, Cannonville, a 17-year-old ! . junior at Bryce Valley High School ' in Tropic, was notified by Carl Albrecht, assistant manager of Garkane Power Association, that he had been selected by the judges of the Garkane essay contest as second place winner. Reece wrote on "My Rural Co-op has Several Benefits for Both Me and Other Members." He hails from Las Vegas and is currently staying with his grandparents in Cannonville, Mr. and Mrs. George Thompson. His plans for the future include completing high school and serving an IDS mission to (he hopes) Japan. Reece, along with Guy Evans who stays with Mr. and Mrs. Pat Coughlin and attends Escalante High School; Elizabeth Hatch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hatch who attends Panguitch High School and Tina Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George (Spike) Brown, Cannonville, who also attends Bryce Valley High, have been selected to attend the five-day Utah Rural Electric Association Youth Seminar at Utah State University, Logan, August 5-10. Some of the highlights during their stay in Logan along with nearly 70 other students will be a barbecue the first day as well as orientation and introduction to the week's activities. The second day will feature several intensive classroom discussions on the formation of cooperatives, self esteem, public power and college life and finances. The third day will feature a classroom discussion on careers in power, power generation, a tour of Logan's hydro-plant, swim and slide at Logan and an evening patio dance. Thursday will cover electrical safety, setting goals, meeting a legislator, pizza supper, games and talent show. Last day activities will include motivation, how to lobby, a lineman demonstration, banquet, awards and a dance. |
