Show Two Garfield Seniors Win 'Sterling' Awards Two Garfield County seniors captured runner-up prizes at last week's Sterling Scholar competition held at Southern Utah State College. Tim Feltner, Bryce Valley High School and Linda Carr, Escalante High School won part-pay scholarships in their categories of competition. Feltner, son of Mr, and Mrs. LaMar Feltner, Tropic was named one of two runners-up in the visual arts division. Feltner, who has studied art for only the past two years, entered pencil sketches, silk screening and water colors in his portfolio for judging. He plans to attend SUSC and would like to attend an art school for special training. He particularly enjoys silk screening and had prepared posters for his senior ball and for the annual upcoming art show to be held In Panguitch, Apr, 27-May 5. Linda Carr, daughter of Rev, and Mrs. Milton Carr, Escalante played Sonatina In C Major, Opus 13, No. 1 Third Movement by Dimitri Kaballevsky for her Sterling Scholar competition. The talented pianist . has been studying piano since age five. She also plays flute with the Escalante High School band. Carr will attend Bob Jones University, Greenville, South Carolina in the fall where she will major in education. Students from 12 high schools and five school districts, 106 seniors in all, competed for awards and honors in the Seventh Annual Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar Program. Parents, friends and relatives enjoyed a banquet at SUSC prior to the awards program which was emceed by Paul James, television sportscaster. Actual judging of the students' portfolios look place throughout the day, along with personal interviews. Scoring was based up to 50 percent on scholarship, up to 25 percent on leadership, and up to 25 percent on citizenship. Each school district provided two judges. Serving as judges from Garfield County were Lucille Proctor and John Seaman, both business education. Serving on the Regional Scholarship Committee were Caryl Baldwin and Alden Black. School coordinators were Art Clark, Panguitch High School; Carl Shakespear, Bryce Valley High School and Susan Wilson, Escalante High School. |
