Show Area Rockhounds Chapter Receives Recognition The Future Rockhounds of America Chapter of Color Country Rockhounds became the first youth organization to be chartered by the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies, Inc. last week, four and one-half years after the group. Ruth Turney, secretary to the RMFMS notified Color Rockhound secretary Michelle Linford of the membership approval with a letter welcoming the group to the regional organization. The RMFMS is one of six regional organizations of the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies which include East, Central, Northwest, Midwest and California-Nevada. The local Color Country group was charted earlier by the Future Rockhounds of America, a national organization headed by Bill Cox, Houston, Tex. Among the benefits available to the Color Country Rockhounds as members of RMFMS will be special slide programs participating In RMFMS gem and mineral shows with full competition rights, receiving the regular publication of RMFMS, and the local club's bulletin editor will exchange bulletins with other member organizations all over the Rocky Mountain area. They will also be able to fully participate in special field trips associated with the various shows. Members of the local group pay 75 cents per member annual dues of which 23 cents is sent to the American Federation. The AFMS makes scholarship monies available to post-graduate students in the earth sciences. The local Color Country youth group sponsored its own gem and mineral show in the spring which generated $400 in scholarship funds which they awarded to Panguitch High School graduating senior Kris Barney. Color Country Rockhounds meet each third Friday at the Panguitch High School library at 8 a.m. The November meeting will be devoted to nominating club members for offices to be voted upon in the December meeting. Club president is Dale Ipson; vice president, Kim Swanger; secretary, Michelle Linford and treasurer, Heidi Hepworth. The four make up the nominating commitee for new officers. The club functions with a board of youth directors. Panguitch High School principal Bennett Josie accepted the chairmanship of the board, Students in the club range from sixth through 12th grade. |
