Show Hansen Acts Editor: I would like to share with you a conversation I had with Congressman Jim Hansen. I called the congressman as I was concerned with his vote against the St. George Cancer Clinic. He expressed his concern and desire to clear up any misunderstanding. He did vote for the bill in its original form, but voted "NO" when five new programs were added to the original bill calling for approximately an additional $5 billion. The "NO" vote, had it been in the majority, would simply have sent the bill back to committee to take off the surplus. The bill was in NO DANGER. The St. George Clinic would not have been threatened but the pork-barrel projects would have been removed and the bill returned to a good, fiscally sound bill. He said he believes with all his heart in the purpose of the cancer clinic, but does not believe we can continue to justify bills which come to the floor billions of dollars over budget. The deficit that could cripple our entire economy is the result of constant, unrestrained "YES" votes on over-budget projects. We voted for Jim Hansen because he has the courage to ask the Congress to act responsibly. I'm proud to be a Hansen supporter. Renee' H. Nolan Panguitch |
