Show New Big-Game Hunts Outlined Two elk units and one antelope unit are listed in the 1979 Big Game . Proclamation for first time hunts. , ... -All three hunting units are located in Garfield County. The Boulder Mountain elk were transplanted on the' eastern slopes of the Boulders starting in the winter of 76-77 from Emergy County. A herd has also migrated from the Fish Lake unit onto the Parker Mountain which is the north-western part of the Boulder unit. Twenty-five bull permits are offered this year for this first-time hunt. A small elk herd has migrated in recent years onto the Beaver Mountains from Mt. Dutton. The herd is located mostly along the county boundary in the Dog Valley area. Some of this elk range is on private land. Hunters should always gain permission for access to private property. Ten bull permits are to be issued on this new unit. In September, for the first time since pioneer days, antelope hunting will become a reality for 5 permit holders in John's Valley. Approximately 150 pronghorns were transplanted into the valley from the Parker Mountain. The latest addition was in January this year. All five permits are for buck only. Elk hunting on the Mt. Dutton will also change this year. The open bull hunting of the past several years will be replaced by a restricted hunt of 25 bull permits. Hunters on Mt. Dutton must apply and draw out for these permits. Heavy hunting pressure coupled with decreased calf production the past two years led the Interagency committee to recommend the more conservative hunj.this year. All applications for restricted hunting permits (where a drawing is usually held) must be made during July. The application must be received in a Division of Wildlife Resources office no later than 5 p.m. July 31 to be eligible. The restricted hunts also include moose, buffalo, bighorn sheep, and the 2-deer permits offered on some units in northern Utah. Application forms and proclamations with all the information needed are now available at all license agents. Open bull elk permits will be sold as in the past of all DWR offices by mail or in person from August 20 to September 28. Elk archery permits may be pur chased from July 1 to August 17. Deer archery tags begin sale July 16 and deer muzzleloader permits will be sold from September 1 to October 19. |
