Show Youth Work Projects On Dixie Forest Land For the Forest Service summer means hard work While the weather is warm and the ground is clear of snow, employees of the Dixie National Forest will be working on a wide spectrum of resource management projects. The people who ' 'get the Job done" on the Dixie are young. Some are member! of the Young Adult Conservation Corps, a government sponsored human resource program in which the Dixie National Forest actively participates. Others are hired directly by the Forest Service for the summer work season. Young people working on the Powell Ranger District, under the direction of District Ranger Walter "Pete" Pier-son, represent a cross section of this "grass roots force" of the Dixie. Pierson has put over 25 young people to work. Four are female. Five are Indian. Many are local. Some come from distant states. These young people work hard on a variety of projects. They plant trees and build fences, maintain campgrounds and install campfire grills They clean Utter from roadsides, stabilize stream bankr nd build water troughs on range land. They provide the muscle which a National Forest needs to run The staff of the Dixie National Forest believes that young people should benefit as much from their summer work experience as the forest does For this reason, district rangers like Pete Pierson make a great effort to recruit people from different backgrounds, different races and both sexes. For some, a summer Job will be an introduction to the great outdoors. For all, their Jobs will provide not only valuable work experience, but lasting friendships with people of different backgrounds. For everyone on the Dixie, it's going to be a good summer. |
