Show Student Doctor Arrives For Garfield Training A student doctor, David Hatt, from the University of Utah, will be spending the next month working with physicians at the Garfield Memorial Clinics in Panguitch, Escalante and Circleville. This experience is important to the student as part of his training. Mr. Hatt is a fourth year medical student who has expressed an interest in finding out what medicine outside of the medical center and what family practice are like. He will be helping local physicians in the area in their practice and will be applying his years of training in medical school to practical matters. Any treatment will be under the direct supervision of the local doctors. Mr Hatt is in Panguitch with his wife Joan and their two children at the New Western. This is the first time in medical education that medical students have been allowed to work with preceptor doctors outside of the University setting. This is felt to be a novel approach to the old problem of trying to interest young physicians in practicing in rural settings as older physicians retire. Panguitch has had three students in the last six months and hopes to utilize its facilities, interested and skillful local doctors, patient support, and small town hospitality to keep supporting the university In this program. |
